A Packed Weekend

Good Morning Friends! Today is the first day of the new school year for my wife, and as a result, much of the weekend was centered around preparing her for that. However, I did manage to get a bunch of gaming in around the margins. I’ve been playing an RF Inquisitor as a test character to decide if I want to go down that path or stick with my Juggernaut shenanigans. In truth, the final decisions will be made when the patch notes drop in Friday and we see if Juggernaut and Righteous Fire spring forth unscathed. One of the things I am playing with as I level this character is relying on Scorching Ray instead of Fire Trap for single-target damage. There are definitely some positives being that I can burn through rare and unique monsters much faster. The glaring negative however is that I have to remain stationary while channeling it, which means there are going to be times when I cannot realistically stop to cast it. I wonder if I can create a linkage that could support both Fire Trap and Scorching Ray without greatly hampering either of them… because it sure would be nice to have both available.

A screenshot from Sir Gog's review of recent 3.22 Path of Exile spoilers showing off the Unending Nightmare atlas passive node.

Sir Gog released a video talking about the spoilers that are being released this week for Patch 3.22, and of them, I am greatly interested in Unending Nightmare. Essentially I have always wanted the ability to just not have Delirium Fog clear on its own. I get that for Delirium farmers this is a bad thing, but for me who only ever dabbles in most of the league mechanics it would be pretty great to have the option of simply clearing the entire map before it ends. Similarly, the Expedition node that gives you one big explosion has been something I have often wished existed. If this new Atlas Passive Tree gives me a node that just turns every Alva into the Inverse Incursions from the Memory maps… I would be in heaven. So far it feels like I am getting a lot of the things that I have wanted to exist, so maybe just maybe there are going to be a few more of them.

My Baldur's Gate 3 Party does a murder of some Gnolls

Most of my weekend gaming was spent playing Baldur’s Gate 3, which is likely no shock to anyone. The game as a whole has had a peak concurrency on Steam of over 800,000 players and it has yet to release on Consoles. I thought I had screwed up my current playthrough because I missed a key character when I could first talk to them. However last night I managed to sort out a sequence of events that had them come to seek me out in my camp, so I have now picked up Karlach and Wyll and shuffled my party around to allow room for both so I can give them a shot. I can already tell that I am going to love running around with Karlach. BG3 is one of those games where you think you are playing for thirty minutes but have wound up playing for four hours. It has been a while since a game has caused this much time dilation for me, but I am enjoying it.

Screenshot from the Code: Action mini game in Honkai Star Rail where I have created a movie poster themed after The Matrix called "Super Hacker" featuring Blade as Neo and Silver Wolf as Trinity.

There is a cute web-based game called “Code: Action” going on in Honkai Star Rail where you retell the stories of Blade, Kafka, and to some extent Silver Wolf. The end result is you create these cute movie posters based on the characters. It is largely fluff, but each of the six posters gives you a chunk of currency in the game so if you have fifteen minutes it is well worth doing. I am slowly chipping away at leveling some more characters. I think I have unlocked enough on my Luocha to where he is undeniably the correct choice for party healing over Natasha. Next up I am probably going to start working on kitting out Himeko because I really like her follow-up attacks. Still enjoying myself but this game is very much in maintenance mode for me where I play thirty minutes a day and feel happy doing so.

A screenshot from Palia Beta showing off my plot and the fact that you can have multiple storage chests.

I did not really get into Palia much more over the weekend, but I did test a theory. The first chest that you place gives you 400 storage capacity, and if you place additional storage chests on your property it just keeps giving you an additional 400 capacity in one large shared bank. Given that I gathered a ton of resources clearing my plot I decided to go ahead and craft a few spares. The grid view is really nice and allows you to align things much more cleanly than you can while placing things in the third person. I sorta wish housing systems like FFXIV had an over-the-top grid view like this for placing objects and aligning them to grid lines.

A screenshot from The Witcher Netflix series during happier times in Season One with Geralt and Yaskier/Dandelion

I also finished Season Three of the Netflix Witcher series. I had been avoiding it because the first half of this season was pretty awful, and I was afraid it would go even further off the rails. I’ve chosen to use an image of happier times when the series was more closely following the actual source material. Essentially The Witcher is a wobbly cart, and the first season had a few rough moments but largely lifted scenes directly from the novels or short stories. In the second season… the cart began to shake itself violently with the mischaracterization and subsequent murder of the beloved Eskel. In Season Three… the wheels have fallen off and the series has been drug along the path on the backs of the still rather excellent character actors. I’ve come to really like the actors playing most of the roles, but instead of doing justice to original property be it the novels or the games… we are just sort of in David Hasselhoff Nick Fury movie territory.

Photo of me and Greybie our Tigerstripe Grey Tabby Stray "Community Cat"

Lastly, to end on a positive note, I spent some time last night hanging out with our community cat Greybie. He has pretty much moved to our backyard permanently along with Tripod. I’ve been going out and loving on him each day when I put down food and water, but he has been mournfully meowing at me for not sticking around and staying a bit. He likes to hop up in my lap while I am sitting in my chair, and it has just been too hot to do this lately. However given that yesterday was the first sub-hundred-degree day in over a week, I figured I needed to go out and indulge the sweet baby. Sadly Tripod is still completely skittish, but at least hangs out… from afar… when I am out there.

I hope that you all had a great weekend. I hope my wife has a great start to the new school year today. I look forward to playing a lot more Baldur’s Gate 3 this week and getting a bit further in my RF Inquisitor test build.

Wild Speculation and Witchers

[UPDATE – 3/24] – It has apparently been confirmed by CDPR that the medallion is in fact a Lynx.

Good morning friends! We are about to go on a journey of wild speculation. On this journey I am going to talk about a lot of events that happen in the Witcher video game series, namely the third outing. If you have not played this game and are spoiler sensitive, then today’s post might not be for you. If you have played the game or simply don’t care… then join me on this ride. On March 21st, CD Projekt Red released this teaser image on twitter along with a link to a blog post outlining a few bits of information. Firstly this is the official confirmation of what pretty much everyone assumed… that there is another Witcher game in the works. Secondly it announces that effectively after Cyberpunk, all future development will be abandoning their custom REDengine in favor of Unreal Engine 5.

This is probably a good call honestly. Let’s talk about this piece first because it is maybe the least speculative. Based on past experience with studios that insist on building their own engine… the track record is pretty spotty. For example a good number of the problems associated with both Mass Effect Andromeda and Anthem came down to them struggling to master the Frostbite engine produced by DICE and originally designed for first person shooters. Similarly the REDengine itself is known for more than a little bit of jank associated with it. Companies roll their own engines largely in an effort to avoid having to pay a license fee on each copy sold of the game. However it is starting to seem like maybe having a highly optimized engine right out of the box is worth the fees associated with it. I personally think this is a great move.

Next up we have the sigil/talisman being shown. It is very clearly from the School of the Wolf or any of the “known” schools that are either from book or game canon. What I thought immediately was that it seemed like it was maybe a Lynx with the way the ears were shaped. While there does not exist a canon “School of the Lynx” there is one in fan fiction. Now I have some personal problems with the way this school is described, so I highly doubt that CD Projekt Red is borrowing a note from “fic” directly. Per the wiki page, this school is said to have been formed by Lambert and Keira Metz. At the end of Witcher 3, the School of the Wolf is in shambles and the remaining Witchers all go their own ways abandoning Kaer Morhen.

Lambert specifically does in deed couple up with Kiera Metz as she talks about some plans for which she would need a Witcher. It is assumed that the two of them go off together, but to the best of my knowledge there is no specific place that they were said to be going. In the “fic” the author sees them going south and forming a new Witcher school. So this is entirely probable because it seems like it is easy enough for any sorceress to recreate the reagents needed for the Witcher process. However why I find this deeply unlikely is that it goes against every fiber of Lambert’s being. In the books, the games, and even the Netflix series he is characterized as being severely scarred by the “Trial of the Grasses” and is vehemently set against the creation of new Witchers. I just cannot see him willfully founding another Witcher school period, regardless of how cool the Lynx sigil is.

The only other thing we have to go on from the teaser image is that there is a lot of snow. In what I consider to be the best ending of the Witcher 3, Geralt and Triss Merigold retire to Kovir. In the plot thread of helping the various magic users escape Novigrad, they boarded a ship bound for Kovir where Triss had secured their safety. Even before this image I assumed that the next game would be set in Kovir given that it is an area of the world we have yet to explore in the games. While Yennifer is the “book canon” lover of Geralt, the games have always favored Triss so I feel like the “official” ending of the third game is going to be way more likely to follow that path.

The other part of the “best” ending for me personally is when Ciri follows in Geralt’s footsteps and officially becomes a Witcher. While she has never undergone the trial, her natural magical aptitude more than makes up for any of the “official” Witcher abilities. So if Geralt ended up in Kovir, I find it highly likely that Ciri would head that way as well. With the effective death of the School of the Wolf, it does make me wonder if together they form their own School that follows a different path allowing men and women both to become Witchers. I think Geralt will have a very minimal role in this new saga because effectively the “child surprise” saga has been wrapped up neatly. I wonder even if they might go so far as to kill of Geralt and use his death as a call to action.

Ultimately I think we are headed down a path that is going to give us a game that starts somewhat similar to Cyberpunk. I feel like we are going to take the role of an enigmatic character that allows us to effectively “design a Witcher”. Representation is super important and giving folks the ability to play someone other than a very specific Male archetype would go a long way to making folks feel more comfortable in the setting. For awhile I thought that maybe the next game would simply give us a choice of playing as Geralt or playing as Ciri, however post Cyberpunk I think this path is going to be more likely. My only hope is that they leave the genitalia choices out of this character creator because they just ended up being super creepy.

One of my big concerns however is that it seems like CD Projekt Red is not learning from their own mistakes. In 2013 we saw the very first teaser trailer for Cyberpunk 2077, and it was December of 2020 before we saw the release of the game. In those seven years a toxic amount of hype was allowed to build for this game, and it would not have mattered what was released… it never would have been able to live up to expectations. I figure the best case scenario is that we are at least three years out from being able to download and play the next Witcher game. That is still a very long time for excitement to build… and I fear we are going to have a repeat of the same doom cycle that followed Cyberpunk 2077. I personally loved the game and had a great experience, but I also played the game on a beefy PC. I think the expectations are even going to be higher for the next Witcher game, and I think it is a bit of a mistake to throw out a teaser image so early when we all know the game is still MANY years away.

That said… it is somewhat fun to speculate and it allows me to write a post like this.

Bob Rides Again

Hey Friends! I decided to take yesterday off because I was not really feeling up to blogging… and also had the day off. We had a cold snap this weekend that basically killed any desire to go out into the world and do things. Additionally we have been on this kick of trying to cook more at home rather than door-dashing everything. So the end result was that we mostly hunkered down while my wife read and I played lots of video games. I stumbled onto something humorous in Forza Horizon and if you follow me on Twitter you already know this. They have in game the 1974 Honda Civic and it is very close to what was my very first vehicle. So of course I had to pick it up and play around with it… and it drives pretty much exactly like I remember the ACTUAL “Bob” driving like.

The actual “Bob” has been rotting away at my parent’s house since I parked it there in college. There were significant transmission issues when I stopped driving it, and now it more or less sits there like many other vehicles rusting away. I don’t really clearly remember if I paid $100 or $200 for the car, but I do remember buying it myself outright when I got my drivers license. At 6’4″ it was never a comfortable vehicle for me to drive… but it was transportation from point A to point B. In my most immediate circle of friends I also represented the only one with transportation and as a result ended up playing chauffeur quite often. It is kinda cool to tool around a virtual world in something that feels so damned familiar.

Over in Witcher 3 I wrapped up this current play-through, or at least the main story. I managed to navigate my way this time to what I would consider the “best” ending. I had originally planned on going with a Yennifer play-through, but I just can’t bring myself to do it. Triss is just better, sorry for all of you Yennifer stans out there but it is true. Mostly the part I was wanting to correct this time around was the fate of Ciri, because last play-through I made some mistakes and it wound up with Ciri in a not great position. Not going to go into too many details here in case I have friends who have yet to play this game. Side note… if you have not played this game you really should. Just don’t let the early nudity turn you off or set your impressions of what the game at large is going to be like.

The bulk of my weekend however was spent playing God of War on the PC. Yes I am one of those suckers who rebuys games that I own on other platforms. If I have the chance of playing something with a mouse and keyboard I am going to take it. I never made it terribly far into this game on the PS4 or PS5 and now that I am playing on PC it is really in my element. I can only hope that at some point Ghost of Tsushima gets a PC port, because these big open world games just feel better with a mouse and keyboard. I am sure I will probably write a post about it of its own, but I am having a blast. I get the feeling that I am nearing the end of the main story, because I just got one of those “better wrap up everything you need to do” messages. So that places this in the 20-30 hour game range for gameplay, so in that sweet spot of not too short but very much not too long either.

Rowing to Velen

Good Morning Friends. This has been a bit of a weird week and I am not feeling super awesome. I am uncertain if I actually talked about it on the blog but I did something very stupid last week and ended up with several second degree burns. Thankfully however at this point they have all healed minus one spot on my forefinger. As far as gaming goes I have been alternating between wrapping up my play-through of Witcher 3 on the PC and playing the Xbox Series X. I am getting close to the end of the main campaign and am hoping I am on the right track for a very specific ending. In theory tonight or Saturday I should finish this up.

Apart from that I am spending quite a bit of time dinking around with Forza Horizon 5. I am not sure why the game is bringing me so much joy, especially since I seem to spend most of my time just driving around aimlessly. I’m installing it on my PC just to test a theory… but I am guessing I share everything between my XSX play sessions and PC play sessions. I have a handful of vehicles that I really enjoy, and managed to pull an orange rarity vehicle that allows me to fully customize the paint job. So I have this slick car with a two tone paint job that is purple fading to navy. Unfortunately I have been caught up in the moment and been forgetting to press the share button so you get this screenshot again.

This weekend Dad of War arrives on the PC, and I am probably going to be spending quite a bit of time playing that. I have it on the PlayStation but I remember playing it initially and thinking… that I really wish I could play it with a keyboard and mouse. We will see if it magically makes everything better for me, but regardless it is a game that I would love to play through fully. Forza has become my quick drop in and drop out game when I need a break from whatever epic saga I happen to be working on.

Apart from that I don’t have an awful lot to talk about this morning. I hope you are having a great week and end up having a phenomenal weekend.
