Path of Exile Tools

The idea behind the game tools section of Tales of the Aggronaut is to have a simple way of compiling links and resources that are personally useful to me. At some point, I completely stopped using bookmarks, and as a result, I tend to just type in the sites that I am trying to reach. This is great until I shift games and immediately seem to blow everything that I once knew… out of my brain. The game tools then are an easy way of not only compiling links that I find useful but also sharing them with my readers.

Path of Building

One of the biggest challenges with Path of Exile is the sheer overwhelming nature of the passive tree. I thought the sphere grid in Final Fantasy X was a lot… and this is just so much more than I could ever imagine. The positive is it gives you ultimate control over just how nuanced you want to make a build. The negative is… it provides a truly overwhelming amount of choice and if I am not following a build to the letter I get completely lost. Path of Building is a piece of software that is designed to help you with this, telling you what you should be building towards and what phase of the game. This seems to be pretty widely used in the community and while it lives in the “optional” column, it is absolutely something I would suggest because you are going to find a lot of “POB” links in the various build sites.

Loot Filter

Path of Exile throws a lot of items at you. Some of these are useful, but most of them are not. As a result, it is highly suggested that you roll with some form of a loot filter. There are many out there, but the one I have been running each time I have attempted to play the game is Neversink’s Filterblade. The main focus is to make sure you are paying attention to the times that will be important to you in the long run, while de-emphasizing anything that would be considered trash and simply not worth your time. You have a very small inventory, and as someone who regularly looted everything in Skyrim… this has helped me to prioritize what I actually need to be caring about. The other nice thing about the Filter Blade website is it will walk you through the process of installing the filter.

Build Guides

The key resource that seemed to help me attach to this game is following a good build guide. There are a number of sites out there, but these are the two that I am most familiar with. I know Maxroll plans on launching their own site with the start of the next League so I fully expect to be adding it as well.

  • Maxroll.gg Builds
    • Maxroll has rapidly become the go-to site for all things ARPG, and a few leagues ago they launched coverage for Path of Exile.
  • PoE Vault
    • This site is part of the Icy Veins network and features a ton of POE-related content, with a pretty extensive built library.
  • PoE Builds
    • This site seems to be focused on whatever the current league happens to be, so in some ways, it might be a more reasonable experience than having to sort through a bunch of guides that may no longer work for the current rendition of the game.
  • Pohx Dot Net
    • Do you want to play Righteous Fire or know literally anything about the skill? Pohx has an amazing resource of build information on this wiki including an extremely thorough Q&A section.
  • Poe.Ninja Builds
    • While Poe.Ninja is mostly known for being a price guide for items, they also catalog the most progressed characters in each league. This is somewhat of an advanced resource, but if you want to know if anyone is playing a specific ability and how they are making it work… you can do research here.
  • POE Builds Reddit
    • The official Reddit can be a bit inflammatory at times, but this offshoot focuses entirely on build-craft and is generally pretty helpful. While not exactly a great resource for finding a build on the spur
  • Official Path of Exile Forums
  • The Official Tree
    • This is the raw tree as provided by Grinding Gear Games, and is guaranteed to be accurate. Useful if you want to try and theory-craft your own builds.

Crafting Guides

Path of Exile has a pretty extensive crafting system, both through undocumented “vendor patterns” where you can sell a number of items at the same time and get a new item as a result, and through crafting bench patterns. The game does a pretty poor job of explaining how any of this works, but thankfully there are websites out there that fill in this gap.

  • Craft of Exile
    • This is quite possibly the best crafting website out there as it features a number of really cool functions like the ability to emulate what it is like to use currency on a given item. So you can import your item (alt+ctl+c while hovering over the item in the game) and then the emulator allows you to throw all of the currency available in order to see what sorts of results you might get.
  • Vendor Recipe Cheat Sheet
    • This is a quick guide that shows a number of the basic vendor recipes that might be useful for folks leveling through the campaign.
  • Vorici Chromatic Calculator
    • This attempts to determine the most efficient path to recoloring an item. You choose the sockets that you are trying to hit and the raw stat requirements for a given item, and it will attempt to tell you the path that will spend the least number of Chromatic Orbs.

Economy Tools

Path of Exile has a very robust trade economy, and I’ve written entire posts about this. For the purpose of the tools section, however, I am just going to be linking to a few things at a very high level.

  • The Official Trade Website
    • All trades are done at least in theory through the official Path of Exile website. This allows you to search the public tabs of all of the players currently logged into the game with items to sell.
  • POE.Ninja Prices
    • This is the unofficial price guide for all items in Path of Exile, and mostly what everyone uses to price their items.
  • Awakened POE Trade
    • This is an overlay that among other things allows you to price-check your items while in the game.
  • Better Path of Exile TradingChrome Plugin
    • This plugin integrates with the Path of Exile website and allows you to save frequent searches. Sadly this only works with Chrome, so I pretty much only use that browser for trading.

Useful Tools

  • DivCards.io
    • This is a tool that lets you quickly find out what Divination Cards drop in a given map. Extremely useful when Kirac is offering a mission that drops an entire stack of Div Cards.
  • Campaign Cheat Sheet
    • Are you playing through the POE Campaign for the 30th time? This site has a quick “go here, do this” breakdown of the entire campaign.
  • PoeDB
    • This is essentially the “WoWHead” for Path of Exile, allowing you to look up any information regarding to items in the game.
  • The GOOD Wiki
    • When searching for anything Path of Exile related, you have to be very careful that you end up on POEwiki.net as the “Fandom” hosted Wiki is woefully outdated.
  • POELab
    • There are folks out there that make a large profit running the Labyrinth for enchants. This guide shows you what the layout of each “Lab” is at any given time.
  • POE.re
    • Every single search box in Path of Exile supports regular expressions. This tool allows you to quickly cobble one together.

YouTube/Streams

As with many modern game communities, a lot of the information related to them can be found on YouTube or in Video Stream form. So as I find additional useful resources, I will be adding them to this list.

  • Zizaran
    • Great YouTuber/Streamer that focuses primarily on Path of Exile content. He is in large part why I have been able to get into the game through some of his play-along videos.
  • SirGog
    • SirGog is maybe the single best news source for Path of Exile and some deep theory-crafting about new passive tree nodes and items that are being introduced. I greatly appreciate this channel and it is a bit of a sin that he has as few subscribers as he does.
  • Pohx
    • Pohx is the most chill person in the POE community and is most well known for being the person behind the amazing Righteous Fire guide that he keeps updated for both Juggernaut and Inquisitor.
  • Jorgen
    • Fellow Delve-Enjoyer and proponent of very tanky builds. I greatly enjoy it when he releases a guide or when I can actually catch one of his streams.
  • GhazzyTV
    • Ghazzy is essentially the personality in the community most associated with all things minion builds. Seems to be fairly even-keeled other than when they nerfed minions and he created the “I Don’t Like It, It’s Shit” soundbite meme.
  • Grinding Gear Games
    • Official YouTube channel and Streams for Grinding Gear Games the creator of Path of Exile

Good Morning Folks! While I have been talking about Fallout 76 lately, I am still playing a good deal of Path of Exile. Largely at this point I am about a third of the way through level 99 and would really like to hit 100 as sort of the crowning achievement of the league. I’ve…

Good Morning Folks! I don’t have a heck of a lot to talk about this morning, but I thought I would share something that I realized yesterday. I spend a lot of time in Delve and it is quite possibly my favorite game mode in Path of Exile. I would not be shocked if I…
