Preparing for Endwalker

Good Morning Friends! Last night I got my last ten mogrocks and picked up the nifty satin jacket thingy. It was really the only thing on the list of available items that I felt like I had to get, and even then it waas mostly because I wanted to use it for a new Monk Glamour shown above. Essentially I ground it out mostly through repeated runnings of Praetorium which were worth 10 mogrocks each. I tried some PVP grinding but given that my heart is never in PVP and I just don’t really care about winning or losing… and clearly some people really care… it felt like a waste of time. Praetorium sure is like 50 minutes, but at least I can be watching a YouTube video or even farming things in New World while waiting through the cutscenes.

The last thing that really needs to happen before Endwalker is to clean out all of my retainers. I have ten of them because I have a problem with stuff… and on those there are a bit over 1600 items… most of which is now useless given that I leveled everything to 80. In theory I need to have a grand spring cleaning and turn in for Grand Company Seals. I also need to sift through the vaults and outfit my retainers in some proper gear while I am at it. Given how hard I am putting this off… I am uncertain that I will actually get it done by Friday. Have I mentioned how much I really hate inventory management and how I prefer to just keep digging new holes to stuff items in? If the game allowed me to have more retainers… I probably would have twenty vaults full of crap.

While prepping for Endwalker, I want to break out Super Dungeon Friends again and remind folks that it exists. If you want a long form understanding of what exactly it is… you can check out my original post on it. The short of it is that with cross server opening up at some point during the 6.* patch cycle, I wanted to get a jump on creating a community while folks can look to find groups and do things. This has worked to some extent and has at least allowed folks from certain server communities to meet new people. If nothing else it has served as a great place to ask questions and get friendly answers because we all remember what it was like to try and learn all of these systems. If you are reading this you are welcome to come hang out and join in the nonsense.

Lastly if you are unmoored and sitting on a server without an existing friend group, or starting the game fresh and need a good home… I welcome you all to Cactuar. I’ve been on the server since the launch of A Realm Reborn in 2013 and it is a pretty great place to be. There is just something special about the server and not even an influx of some of the most popular streamers could really tamp down the community spirit. If you need a good home, ping me and we will talk. Using this also as a reminder that if you are trying to create a character on a server, you really need to be doing it during off peak hours… preferably early in the morning. Last night most of these servers were locked to new character creation, but as of this morning they are all back open again. You can check the status of servers via the official page and it will show you if it is safe to transfer characters… which for those curious costs $18 and is started through the MogStation.

Last reminder is to get everything done that you need done by Wednesday, because that is the last full day of play that you are going to have. The servers are going down on Thursday in preparation for the launch of Endwalker on Friday. You can check out the official announcement here, but essentially wrap everything up Wednesday night that you want done before the expansion launches.

Bleeding Earthquakes

Good Morning Friends! I had a very rough weekend for a few different reasons. The main reason however is that Friday night my wife and I had the Pfizer COVID booster along with the Flu Shot. This was maybe not the best idea because I had all sorts of symptoms over the weekend and had no real clue if it was the Booster or the Flu shot, but absolutely know that both arms were sore as hell Saturday morning. We survived and I am feeling much better so far this morning, but yesterday was a bit rough. Saturday was largely “splitting headache” and everything aches territory, and yesterday was run a fever and feel like I am going to die for a couple of hours in the afternoon then things start to fade away. Interesting thing we heard about the booster is that the efficacy should only take about 48 hours to kick in, which means we should be good for any Thanksgiving shenanigans.

The above screenshot is from Final Fantasy XIV as I dipped in briefly over the weekend to try and start to get back into the swing of logging in again. I managed to finish the Doman Enclave and with it comes a really cool ceremony that reminds me of the similar ceremony from Horizon Zero Dawn. I need to find my footing in the coming weeks in FFXIV again, and spend a good deal of time cleaning out my retainers because a large part of the whole “level everything to 80” campaign was so that I could safely chuck a bunch of unneeded gear into the bin… or more likely feed it to the Grand Company vendor for seals. The other part of this that needs to happen is to cobble together some outfits for my retainers themselves as a number of them are quite high up in various professions.

Most of my weekend was spent playing Outriders and the New Horizon patch is in fact good. I got together with Waren a bit on Saturday and ran through some expeditions where he carried me an extreme amount. The rest of the weekend was spent trying to grind up the resources in order to catch up my gear to where maybe I won’t be quite the “backpack” that I ended up being. I also spent some time exploring various builds, and ended up changing my spec up completely to one focused on earthquake and bleed effects. I’ve never NOT been the center tree of Devastator so it is interesting how little it makes a difference survival wise dropping to what I thought was one of the “DPS” trees.

For those who might be curious here is my current talent choices and skills being used composited together into a single screenshot. Here is a note for developers where build diversity is a key part of your game. Maybe you should create a single screen that someone can take a screenshot of that includes all of the relevant choices made for that specific character. It would be nice if it had a rundown of the various bonuses being applied from gear along with the skills chosen and relevant talent choices. I’ve needed to fake out one of these screens so many times while playing different games when I wanted to share my “build” with my readers. I can’t think that I am the only one who wants to do this thing and surely it would be simple enough to create a screen that summarizes all of the various bits of data you already have access to.

I have also been spending a fair amount of time playing my “main alt” which is the Technomancer. Thing I have learned about Outriders at least, but I am wondering if it applies to all third person shooters… is that apparently I prefer playing a female character model because it takes up less space on the screen. The male character in outriders is kinda bulky, and is occluding a fair amount of the visual area… and honestly I sorta wish I could gender change my main to being something more svelte and taking up less space. I remember having this issue with the Norn in GW2, and why I ended up going with the much smaller Human when I rolled a main after beta. I need to pay more attention to this in the future and see if this is something that carries over to other games.

Lastly I am not going to talk about it much this morning, but I left a heated review of New World on Steam over the weekend. I’ve uninstalled the game and I am not really ready to talk about it in any manner that does not come across as angry gibberish yet. If you are super curious I littered my Twitter account with random threads throughout the weekend. Basically Patch 1.1 killed my desire to play the game with its changes to the end game camps, and after growing steadily more agitated Saturday night while recording the podcast… I decided it was better for my mental health to uninstall and force myself to walk away from it. The only game that I have ever loved this much and see managed this poorly is World of Warcraft, and I think that is probably why my posts on that game often come across as angry drivel as well. Key difference being that anger was spread out over a decades worth of decisions… and this was all crammed in a two month period making it seem so much worse.

AggroChat #366 – FFXIV Endwalker Prologue Show

Featuring:  Ammosart, Ashgar, Belghast, Grace, Kodra, Tamrielo, and Thalen

Last week we brought you the Epilogue show for the patch content following the release of Shadowbringers that brings that core story to a close.  This week we dive into the content following that, namely patches 5.4, 5.5, and 5.55 that serve as the prologue to the events that we will be experiencing starting November 19th with the release of Endwalker.  I feel like we probably know less about what is going to happen going into this expansion than we have previously, but we talk about what takes place and what we do know about the future.  We also talk a bit about our mixed feelings regarding specifically the villains that we are going into this expansion with.

Topics Discussed

  • Final Fantasy XIV Shadowbringers
    • Patch 5.4 – Futures Rewritten
    • Patch 5.5 – Death Unto Dawn – Part 1
    • Patch 5.55  – Death Unto Dawn – Part 2

AggroChat #365 – FFXIV Shadowbringers Epilogue Show

Featuring: Ammosart, Ashgar, Belghast, Grace, Kodra, Tamrielo, and Thalen

About a month ago we were being nostalgic about that time when we used to do a spoiler show for a Final Fantasy XIV expansion, and then do a final show talking about all of the content that releases after the expansion and leading into the next.  We had a few folks that were not caught up and we set a date in time of wanting to record this show on the 30th, just ahead of the Endwalker release mania.  Last night we recorded this show and quickly realized there was no way that we were going to cram it all into a single episode.  So as a result I bring you the Shadowbringers Epilogue show today covering patches 5.1, 5.2, and the wrap up of the Shadowbringers related story in 5.3.

Next week we will bring out the Endwalker Prologue show because really the 5.4, 5.5, and 5.55 content is teeing up the beginning of the next expansion more than resolving anything related to Shadowbringers.  I hope you as listeners enjoy both of these shows and it should go without saying that these are going to be full spoiler episodes as we cover everything we can remember that happened in each of the patches.

Topics Discussed

  • Final Fantasy XIV Shadowbringers
    • The State of the Game at the end of 5.0
    • Patch 5.1 – Vows of Virtue, Deeds of Cruelty
    • Patch 5.2 – Echoes of a Fallen Star
    • Patch 5.3 – Reflections in Crystal
