The Waiting Begins

Well folks I am about as ready as I am going to be for Endwalker, and now the waiting starts. Sure there are a lot of things that I could have done to get prepared for expansion, but being completely honest… the whole grind everything to 80 sapped the will out of me. Yesterday over lunch I spent about thirty minutes turning in belts to the Maelstrom vendors for Grand Company Seals… and having to dump them periodically into ventures. So at least I should be set on running retainers through ventures for quite some time. For those who are curious the only things currently in my inventory are:

  • Two Stacks of Potions gained through copious amounts of Palace of the Dead and Heaven on High
  • A Phoenix Down – because of course you have to keep one of these around
  • A stack of really cheap food that I am just going to use for getting that +3% xp boost
  • Gysahl Greens to keep my battle buddy summoned to fight by my side
  • Way too many clear prisims but I refuse to get rid of them because at some point I will level a tradeskill high enough to make them into glamour prisms
  • Glamour Prisms and Removers because they never leave my inventory
  • Some Versatile Lures because I might decide I need to fish as part of a quest

I’ve had people comment about how clean my inventory is… and I beg you to please pay no attention to the bulging vaults of my retainers. I have a bad habit of just cramming things in their inventory until I absolutely cannot ignore it any longer. That said… I am ignoring it a bit longer because supposedly there are gacha boxes going in on the Grand Company vendors and turning in all of this gear should earn me a lot of them. Basically I’ve ratholed so much gear into my retainers for the purpose of leveling the jobs all the way to the maximum level. However when it came to actually doing that… I just bought a set of poetics gear every 10 levels and never touched any of the accumulated dross from my bank. So very little of it do I care about for glamour purposes, so I fully expect to convert all of it into gacha boxes.

As is often the case… I pre-ordered Endwalker so long ago that I had to log into the MogStation to verify that I had in fact set up everything to be able to participate in the head start tomorrow. Thankfully they give us this very useful screen to alleviate our fears. What I do not love however is that they make us wait so freaking long to get the actual key to register it. The MogStation being awful is a meme, but god is it true. In theory buying a game FROM Square should automate all of these steps, but nope I had to manually register the head start code, and will have to manually register the final key as well. Anyways if you are like me… and concerned about making sure you can log in as expected… maybe check your own MogStation.

Since New World is a shit show, I have been branching out and finding other things to keep me entertained until I can officially walk on the moon. Lately I have been playing a lot of Cyberpunk 2077, and really this game does not deserve the stigma hanging over it. Mass Effect Andromeda and Cyberpunk 2077 are both games that were killed by the bad press that came from launching way too early. Within the first week or so enough patches had been released at least on the PC that the games themselves were extremely enjoyable to play through. Granted I am not the sort of player who goes out of his way to purposefully break games, and I largely completed missions as intended. However since launch a whole slew of patches have gone into the game and the most important of these… is your cat can now move around your apartment.

This time around I opted to start a Femme V with the Nomad Backstory. While I feel like Corpo is probably the strongest because of the quest dialog options it gives you… Nomad is pretty great as well. Truth be told that in this world… I would more than likely live the nomad life or at least it seems way better than living in the slums of the city. The Nomad vehicles are my jam because they go really fast and handle extremely well… which honestly is all I want from a game. They also have this whole road warrior vibe to them which I dig greatly. There are a lot of things that seem to have improved… and a few things that were removed. For example you can no longer get legendary quality mantis blades for free without actually fighting anything. These appear to only be available for purchase at ripper docs, but supposedly they added other legendary cybernetics items to make up for the loss of the free blades and the monowire.

My only real regret is the fact that I have started this play through… and am starting to really get into the story again… and know that come tomorrow I will not care about it at all. As a result the last few nights I have not really been moving the plot forward and instead doing a bunch of the side missions which hopefully means I can pick up at some point in the future and sink back into the life of V after the shiny has worn off Endwalker a bit. Similarly I fully expect to check back into New World, though the current trajectory of that game does not give me much hope. I found out this morning that there were apparently stealth nerfs to the crafting of dungeon keys, so that they now require quadruple t he amount of stone than they did prior to 1.1.1. So it seems that not only did they wreck open world grinds… but they are now trying to slow down the dungeon grind as well.

Tomorrow I will likely be pretty late doing a blog post. I expect to get up tomorrow morning and play for a bit before writing some of my initial impressions. I will keep things spoiler free of course and just talk about the general shape of my feelings. However hopefully none of you will actually be reading my post and will instead be enjoying Endwalker yourself.

Rune II Gameplay Thoughts

Hey Friends! There are times when it is actually a good thing that I have way too many games fighting for my attention. So last winter I happened upon a game that looked interesting called Rune II, that was an epic games store exclusive. I had never played the first game, or at least I don’t remember playing the first game but what I was seeing about the sequel looked pretty cool. I picked it up… and then promptly forgot about it and never actually played during the launch cycle last November. Based on what I am reading it was really not well received because the core loop of the gameplay was a bit flawed. Since I am going through the “install all the games to play on the new rig” phase of new hardware, I stumbled upon this game in my library and thought to give it a shot.

The game that launched in November was apparently considerably different to what I am now playing. When you started the game you were thrust back into the land of the living with a timer ticking down in the upper corner of the screen. When that timer hit zero, Ragnarok happened and you were sent to fight Loki. If you died… and you were very likely to die… the loop would start over again with progression in your character saved as you continued to get stronger until eventually at some point you could defeat the final encounter of the game. From what I am reading there were no real quests or NPCs to guide you along your journey… just the death loop mechanic until you got strong enough to finish the game.

The game I am playing however feels very much like a single player MMORPG, where you are dropped on an island and do a number of quests for the NPCs where you help build the village back up to its former glory. You chop down trees, break rocks for ore, and eventually complete a number of buildings while you other quests to learn how the basics of the game work. Then before you move to the next village you are attacked by the forces of Loki who is trying to bring about Ragnarok. The end result is somewhat of a base defense game where defensive towers aid you as you take down several waves of encounters and a boss encounter ultimately saving the village.

Your adventure sends you forth after some arcane relics that Heimdall needs, to the next village… one that worships him. Again you do a number of traditionally MMO quests and also build this village up until the cycle repeats itself with waves of NPCs attacking it. Each new building you add however increases your access to crafting resources like the ability to craft healing items that come in extremely handy. Out in the world there are a number of runestones which will also teach you new patterns expanding the relative power of the type of items that you can craft.

What is interesting about this first town however is it also has a very MMO style dungeon in it. You venture forth into it in an attempt to reach some divine summit. However to get there you need to pass through this huge sprawling cave filled with various encounters. Clearing through it reminded me very much of Tamtara Deepcroft or something similar to that. There were several rooms with boss encounters and a ton of chests along the way that provided copious amounts of loot. The thing is… the dungeon respawns it seems and you can keep going back into it at will as you continue to level.

Upon reaching the summit you are given the opportunity to devote yourself to one of three gods of the realm. Thor serves as the DPS path with lots of AOE abilities and things that increase your time in berserking mode. Odin seems to be the more group support tree with things that aid your party members… which only really comes into play if you are playing through the game co-op with friends… that is apparently a viable option. Hel serves as the third option and her tree I think is supposed to feel like the more stealthy path… but mostly it is sneak attacks and life drain abilities. I had to go down the Thor path which apparently gives me a buff to using Hammers and then all of his side quests that are Thor specific involve me killing Draugr with Hammers. So it seems like I inadvertently locked myself into a specific weapon choice going forward.

Like an MMORPG there is plenty of loot and the loot is arranged into quality brackets following the traditional White, Green, Blue, Purple, Gold format. What is interesting is in a lot of games that focus heavily on crafting, the gear that is crafted is just the same stuff that is dropping. This is true to some extent but there are a number of things that I have seen drop that I have never seen a pattern for making it seem like both are worthwhile ways to gear yourself. One thing I particularly like is that you can dismantle items in the field keeping you from having to jet back to a smithy constantly. There is fast travel in the game, but each time you do it a rune of travel is consumed. These are easy enough to make at the Sage’s hut but they are still a depleting resource.

I’ve played the game far enough to reach the second age of Midgard, aka the Age of Fire as the cycle of Ragnarok begins. Now the sky is on fire and Loki randomly bombards you with fireballs from the sky. Additionally the spawn of Surtr the fire giant roam the land along with a new variant of the Dragr that are all burned and ashen. Loki has somehow locked away the gods so that they can no longer interact with the mortal plane and I’ve moved from helping Heimdall to helping Thor as he tries to collect some artifacts that he needs. Be warned… this isn’t loveable Thor but instead the self absorbed talks about himself in third person Thor. I am guessing each phase of the game is going to be another “Age” of Midgard. You can in theory travel to the entire map in any of the phases but you are specifically focusing specific areas if you are following the quests.

All in all it is a pretty solid game experience and if you are looking for something that feels like a mix of Skyrim, Valheim and a quest driven MMORPG you might check it out. I have no clue what the co-op gameplay looks like, but it appears that you could spec a character exclusively for group play if you decided to do so. I am largely going down the DPS path because it seems to make killing things much easier. There is an AOE leap attack in the Thor tree that is brutal and is pretty much my opener for fighting multiple things at the same time. Similarly I can throw Thor’s hammer which does AOE damage and stuns the target, so while I love my tanking… there didn’t seem to be much of a point in Odin’s tree if you are largely playing solo.

This is at least one of those times when I am really glad that I didn’t give the game any attention at release, because it seems like they have mostly righted the ship after a bad core loop at launch.

Ferrets Names and Bad Deaths

Hey Friends! I slept a little better last night. I ended up going to bed around 9:30 at night and have no clue when I actually fell asleep but I think it was before the evening news. I also woke up this morning remembering one of my dreams, so I am guessing it was basically the last thing I was thinking about before the alarm went off. I somehow ended up on a panel with Loading Ready Run and it was a “show” about best ferret names. It started off with Cori showing a video about how she grew up with a ferret that terrorized her growing upt… I have no clue if this is a thing or just something my brain concocted. After that it turned into a thing where each of us threw out our five best ferret names. Disturbing thing is I even remember my five names:

  • Captain Snuggles
  • Professor Barnabus T. Wigglebottom the Third
  • Dave
  • Lager
  • Shinobi

Naming animals completely banal human names has always cracked me up, so I understand Dave. Lager also makes a weird kind of sense in my head because the Ferret cousin the Stoat… always makes me think of a Stout. Shinobi I guess I was going for Ninja but a much cooler name? I feel like the strongest offering however is Professor Barnabus T. Wigglebottom the Third. I told my wife this mess of nonsense and she decided that Josie’s surname is now Wigglebottom.

As far as gaming goes, I mostly played State of Decay 2 last night. Unfortunately Eli the person that I showed off yesterday is no longer with us. He took a stupid death. I had just moved our base over to a firestation which provides for a good deal more room, and was trying to get the lay of the land. So I went over to a billboard to climb up and look around and one of the problems with ladders in this game is it doesn’t always hook you onto them correctly… ending up with Eli taking a plummet directly onto the concrete. So poor Noemi here had to go finish off Zombie Eli in order to get back all of the stuff he had been carrying around.

I mean ultimately deaths are a large part of the whole State of Decay thing, but so far I have lost two. The first was killed when I got ambushed by some desperados trying to take our stuff, which at least seemed like a fitting death. Poor Eli though deserved better. I am kinda proud of the fact that I have both halves of the original lesbian couple that started this all… Brooke and Noemi. I do find I am somewhat hesitant to take either out adventuring much because it would feel real bad if I lost one of the originals. The sad thing about losing Eli though is he was my strongest melee character and had specialized in swordplay, which was super useful for fighting plague zombies.

Right now I am enjoying my time with a pack of survivors in State of Decay 2 because it is oddly relaxing. Another event that happened last night is the Dead Axel group moved in beside us so literally next door to our base is one of our allies.

Accidents with Zombie Survivors

Good Morning Friends. I have not been sleeping terribly well the last few nights which has lead me to be sorta walking through the world in a fog. I am not sure what is up but whatever the case I hope it passes soon. As a result I am not terribly certain I am up to some epic post, so instead you are going to get some blurbs about various things I am doing. Firstly I am still playing quite a bit of Outriders and am pretty much doing farming runs. Essentially in Trench Town there are two repeatable quests that reward quite a bit of gear in the process. The first of these is the Wanted posters that I have talked about before, but each individual quest rewards you a random epic or better weapon and doing the full sequence of ten quests rewards you a random legendary weapon. The other series is the Monster Hunts, which each reward a random piece of epic or better armor… with the full sequence rewarding you a piece of legendary armor.

I also find myself recording some more videos and I am not entirely certain why. There are just times that it is easier to talk about something while doing it and recording it in video form. One that I am releasing today shows off my favorite “loot cave”, which is actually just the outhouse mission over and over. I’ve also released a video of me doing a single Wanted quest on World Tier 11, and then another where I did two on World Tier 12 and got a random useless legendary weapon from turning in. If watching me do nonsense is your jam then by all means have at it. Like I know I will never have many viewers but I also find recording videos to be this weirdly relaxing extension of blogging? I push myself into the same sort of mindset as when I am writing and pretending that I am largely just talking to myself.

On a whim last night I started playing State of Decay 2 again and I mean I know precisely WHY I did it… but actually going through with reinstalling it and playing it was not terribly expected. One of the folks at Undead Labs, Geoffrey Card aka @Rangutang does these really enjoyable streams where he either plays State of Decay or explores some random game that he finds interesting. More recently he has been on a kick of playing State of Decay 2 again, because Undead Labs is leading up to some open beta on Steam and the combination of hanging out in chat while he played made me want to play. This is the problem I have with streaming… it doesn’t trigger a feeling of wanting to watch more of the stream but instead triggers a desire to just play the damned game myself.

So last night I started a brand new group of survivors. Things were going awesome until they suddenly were not and I wound up losing two people when tangling with some bandits that stole an allied groups meds. I did manage to relocate us to a new base of operations centered around a truck stop. Now I need to find a programmer so I can loot a drop pod that is taking up one of my spaces, so that I can build something useful there for my community instead of it just taking up space.

Lastly I am still playing Elder Scrolls Online, and by playing I mean logging in every night to loot my daily reward cache and train mounts on my four 50s. I allowed myself to get into the bad pattern of just logging in every character and doing crafting writs during the recent holiday event, and I need to actually get back into questing and doing something more enjoyable. The combination of the Jesters Festival and the Anniversary event meant that I devoted a bunch of time to grinding up three characters from low levels to the level cap. This however sorta knocked the wind out of my sails because it got me out of the pattern of logging in and questing each night. I need to get back into that because it is that sort of thing that keeps me engaged in the game. Unfortunately I have been in the pattern of “maintenance gaming” where I just log in to do dailies and then immediately log right back out.

I am not entirely certain what is going to win when it comes to my play time. I had a lot of fun last night playing State of Decay 2 and I expect that I will probably play some more of that in the coming evenings. Then given how exhausted I am right now… it is highly likely that I might just crash at some point rather than spend much time gaming in the first place. I wish I knew why I was not sleeping well, because I sure would love a good nights sleep.
