Digesting Expeditions

Well friends, I have reached the end of the storyline in Outriders. I struggled a bit with the final boss and dealt with it by lowering the difficulty and just steamrolling it. This is apparently maybe something specific to my class because my friend Tipa said she had no real issues with it on Trickster. Also she had been farming gear quite a bit so was probably way better geared than I was at the same time. I was wearing mostly blues when I finished the campaign because that is ultimately what I had on hand at the time. I didn’t spend much time farming because it seemed somewhat pointless until I had hit the level cap.

Outriders is this weird blend of Destiny and Diablo 3 and there are a lot of parallels between this game and those two titles. However it seems like it has learned from all of the systems involved the traditional loot grind game model and evolved them quite a bit. For example I’ve had several Legendaries drop, but for me… I largely viewed them as a vehicle to get Tier 3 mods and ended up deconstructing them all so far. Here is an example of the difference between a Tier 2 and a Tier 3 mod. Minefields II causes an explosion of grenades to spawn when you kill an enemy. Minefields III however causes this same effect to trigger anytime you crit an enemy and it can happen every 3 seconds. So this goes from being an extremely effective means of trash wave clear… to an effective means of fighting pretty much anything and STILL being able to do wave clear.

Leveling up Epic and Legendary gear is extremely cost prohibitive, but slotting those same abilities in other items is extremely cheap. So one of my core goals has been to try and collect every mod I come across so that I can shift up my gear as needed. This process works much like the Enchanter in Diablo 3, in that you can only modify a single mod on an item… but unlike the enchanter it isn’t a random roll and instead just allows you to choose whatever mod you want in a given slot. Putting Legendary Minefield III on a blue quality gun cost roughly 400 iron which seems extremely reasonable for the significant power bump that gives you. Granted you are missing a full mod slot that Epic or Legendary gear would have, but for now I am making do with this.

I’ve officially entered the end game at this point since I wrapped up the campaign last night. I am one level away from the cap and from there it is only a matter of leveling my loot up to higher tiers. I believe the highest loot level in game right now is 50 which is a long ways off from where I am currently in progression. When you finish the campaign this game mode called Expeditions unlocks and for the most part these are a weird blend of a Destiny Strike and a World of Warcraft Mythic+ Dungeon. You are presented with a mission and you are timed while completing it. The faster you make it through the better the rewards that spawn at the end. I did not do so well on my first expedition but walked away with something silly like fifteen blues. I imagine those turn into purples and maybe even oranges if you manage to push through in time.

In expedition mode you are presented with a new world map and around it are various locations to reclaim resources from drop pods. It seems like at any given time there are going to be at least 3 different activities available. When I beat one another one showed up on my map, allowing you some freedom of choice as you move around the map knocking them out. It was a little frantic going in solo, but I am sure this is the sort of thing that would be great with friends, especially if you have some synergy between your builds. The one I ran was a standard kill stuff then do a thing and keep repeating this until you win.

It seems that the expeditions have their own leveling system called Challenge Tiers and that the World Tier from before has no impact on these missions. Continuing my converting things into Diablo or Destiny terms… this appears to be the equivalent of running Greater Rifts. The key difference here being that it is through these expeditions that you unlock the higher gear ratings. Challenge Tier 15 for example drops those item level 50 pieces that we will eventually be chasing. Similar to Diablo it sounds like there are absolutely times when you could get stuck in this progression because you lack the quality of gear to progress or your player build is not as optimal as it should be.

Another thing that I am finding out this morning, is that there are apparently repeatable quest chains that will reward a legendary each time you make it all the way through them. I am probably going to do a bit of farming in this department to at least complete a set of the various mods. Supposedly you can drop down to World Tier 1 and burn through some of these quest chains quick given that the only thing that actually matters is the final turn in, which will give you an on gear level legendary pick. For example I picked up The Landlubber last night which I immediately deconstructed to give me access to Legendary Minefield III that I was talking about earlier.

Pretty much every bit of content in the game is repeatable, and as such you can figure out what activity makes you the happiest and farm it indefinitely. I’ve heard folks have had good luck with the “Nature Calls” questline… aka the dude stuck in the outhouse. It is pretty quick to complete and involves a large number of captains in a very short period of time. I’ve run it a few times and didn’t get spectacular drops but I can probably keep bumping up the world tier in order to increase the drop rates and make it worth my time. Now essentially I need to finish leveling the rest of my final level… and then shift focus to gearing.

Slideshow of Atrocities

Morning friends. I have been playing an excessive amount of Outriders over the last few days. I started the game a bit late but have been picking up pace, largely as the story has grabbed me. At this point I am sitting at level 27 of 30 and I believe that I am nearing the end of the main story. The game could of course throw me a monkey wrench at the end but it seems like I have more or less reached the end of the map and also nearing the source of the signal. I would have kept pushing forward last night but I effectively ran out of time and had to be up and around fairly early this morning.

There are a lot of times someone will say a game has “Adult Themes” and what they mean by that is an extreme amount of sexualization. However there is another side of that coin, and that is the side that Outriders lands on. This game deals with the horrors that humanity can enact upon itself and is a slide show of our base instincts. In many ways it reminds me of the early days of The Walking Dead, back when the show still had a point. We have this clear mission… to venture forth into the unknown and find a signal that has been broadcasting since humanity reached planetfall. On this journey a lot of bad things happen and some of them will feel like a sucker punch… and others will feel futile and pointless.

In a game like Diablo 3, each act of the game has a base of operations where all of the infrastructure required to play the game exists. In Outriders this “camp” travels with you as you move across the map. The central conceit is that you have one of the only vehicles that is “analog” enough to withstand the electrical interference brought on by the anomaly. Each time you stop in a new area you set up a base camp until it is time to move the vehicle forward again. This is a bit of weird concept to get used to because, each of these areas ultimately represents a sub-region with its own travel system and then to traverse the larger world map it requires you to pack up camp and move the vehicle again.

Along the way you gather up a group of companions that will end up being more permanent fixtures in the story. I wasn’t sure what I would think about them but I have grown to love them all in their own way. In a lot of ways Outriders feels like an alternate universe versions of Mass Effect Andromeda. Both games have a similar focus on exploring new regions and finding a new home for humanity. In Andromeda a lot of things go wrong… but in Outriders every conceivable thing goes wrong and ends up with humanity mired in an endless war for decades over the few resources that are left. This isn’t high minded exploration… this is slow trench warfare fought in inches not miles.

One of the big things leading up to the launch of the game were all the farming that folks did in order to try and amass a vault full of legendary weapons. I feel like this was largely futile because upgrading legendary and even epic quality weapons is a losing battle. I tried for a bit to keep upgrading the weapon on the far right because it is by far my favorite item I have gotten in the game. The combination of perks was just amazing… and I have held onto it hoping that some day the resources will be plentiful enough to push it all the way to the level cap. The legendaries however… I am mostly holding onto them for deconstruction fodder in order to learn the mods they contain.

These instead are my workhorses that I have carried forward in the game. The sub machinegun I found as a random drop that just happened to have burning bullets… which are extremely powerful. The second is one of the preorder weapons and in both cases I have leveled them forward each time I dinged and was able to push them up one more level. Thankfully I have managed to maintain a good stash of resources and have been able to pull up my gear one level at a time as I progressed through the game. You can effectively do this with blues… but the purples I get I just vault for later deconstruction whenever they cease being useful.

In many ways Outriders is the strange mutant child of Destiny and Diablo 3 and because of that it is directly in my wheelhouse. I really enjoy the gameplay of Devastator with its up close and personal… kill all the things to heal style of interactions. I look forward to seeing what the further gameplay is like once I have finished the main story and capped my character out at thirty. I know at some point I will have to start leveling up my world rank again, but I am largely focused on doing that once I have hit cap. Similarly there are a lot of hunts that I have not partaken in, in part because they seem to reward purple or better items and I wanted to wait until closer to the level cap before doing a lot of these.

It is a really great game, but I still feel like I need to keep warning you… that whatever you think of as a “dark game”, this game is going to keep getting darker. The blend of science fiction and horror reminds me quite a bit of Event Horizon, so that if you were cool with that movie then you might be just fine with this game. Think back through history at some of the greatest atrocities of mankind… and that will also prepare you for the mindset that this game forces you to experience. There are absolutely going to be some folks that just nope out of the game at various points and that is okay. There are moments that make The Division seem cheery. At some point I will do a more holistic overview of the game, but for now I am still engaged and nearing what I think is the end.

Twelve Bleaks out of Ten

Hey Friends! Like all weekends this one went way the heck too fast. I ended up taking off Friday but a good chunk of that was spent taking my dad to the doctor and running errands. As far as activities this weekend they fall into three distinct buckets. Firstly I managed to finish leveling my Bow Nightblade which is the last of the characters that I was planning on leveling while the buff was active. I am contemplating maybe putting a few of the easily levels on the new Sorcerer Tank experiment, but I am absolutely not going to do the grind all the way to level 50. What I really need to spend the next few weeks doing is burning through all of the treasure maps that I have clogging my inventory and bank from doing the Dark Anchor grind.

I need to spend some time evaluating pricing on the guild store so that I can maybe move some of this stuff more quickly. Right now I have my 30 slots filled and I wish there was a way to be able to sell more items without joining additional trade guilds. I guess it makes sense why folks have more trade guilds than pretty much anything else. On the radar is a return to running content on my main because I still would love to be caught up to the point of being able to start the new expansion fresh in June when it lands. I don’t think there is a shot in hell of that happening however, which again is a me thing… because anyone can start the new content day one. I just have this hang up about wanting to complete content in the order it was released.

Another thing that I spent some of the weekend doing was working on my nonsense playlist. At the time of writing this I am up to 894 songs for a grand total of 59 hours and 47 minutes of play time. Considering that I am using shuffle and spotify doesn’t seem to play through everything once before repeating… it is highly likely I will actually listen to everything on it but it makes a good radio that brings me joy. I am still periodically adding things to it as I think about them, but I am probably going to start creating some focused “mixtape” playlists and sharing them with you as well. I am not sure if this brand of nonsense is down anyone’s alley, but I am enjoying it.

Another thing that I spent some of the weekend doing was catching up on Outriders. I attempted to play a bit when it launched but have been otherwise occupied, first with the Diablo 3 Season 23 and later with grinding my Nightblade in Elder Scrolls. The first thing that I did was turn off the thing that keeps increasing your world level because this felt a little weird. My power gained from dropped items was just not keeping up with the difficulty increase and it sorta felt like being dropped into Torment 1 in Diablo 3 before being fully geared. I’ve now set the world level to 3 aka what they call “Normal” and am back to enjoying myself.

I am sure at some point I will write a general review of the game, but one of the bigger takeaways is just how bleak it is. Like I have played some bleak games… but this one is on a whole new level. It seems like so often you meet a character that seems interesting, and then in a very Walking Dead fashion… they callously kill them off with a stray bullet or something else that feels meaningless. I think this is absolutely on purpose to illustrate just how bad of shape the world is, but it does grate on you a bit as you continue to play. I hope that as I keep moving forward I will eventually start to see a glimmer of hope, because right now the straights are much dire.

That is all folks. I hope you have a great week. I seem to have jacked up my sleep patterns and am personally hoping that settles out.

Regularly Playing: March 2021 Edition

Good Morning Folks! I was realizing this morning just how completely out of date my blog side bar is when it comes to the games that I have been playing regularly. In theory I claim that this is my semi-monthly process of trueing up the sidebar so it represents the sorts of games that I am playing. What actually happens is that I go for large blocks of time without updating this and when that happens massive swings occur. For example the last one of these that I did was in October of 2020 and some stuff has changed. So here goes an attempt at maybe doing these regularly again for a bit. For those not already indoctrinated into the process I divide things up into a few categories:

  • To Those Remaining – The games that I am still actively playing or at least expect to be playing within the month.
  • To The New and Returning – The games that I am either dusting off and revisiting or are brand new experiences that I am enjoying.
  • To Those Departing – The games that I am finally removing from the list for one reason or another.
  • Ships Passing in the Night – Games that I don’t expect to regularly play but I spent some time with over the month and enjoyed enough to talk about.

To Those Remaining

Diablo 3 – PC and Switch

My sweet sweet Diablo 3, you are rarely ever gone from this list. There is even a new season starting this Friday and I am looking forward to going through the routine of the seasonal grind. This season has a bunch of changes to the game and as a result they sorta gave us a greatest hits collection of sets available through Haedrigs Gift. As a result I am looking at probably starting a Whirlrend Barbarian for this season because those are so stinking fun to play.

Ghosts of Tsushima – PS5

I am going to be honest, I am leaving this one on the list more as an aspirational placement than a game I am truly actively playing. I boot it up from time to time and play through a few encounters and then put it to bed for a longer period of time. I hope to get back in and play it more intently because also while we have been spilling truth… I feel a little guilty that I am not really doing much with my PlayStation 5.

Hades – PC and Switch

This one retains its spot because it is still probably my go to “playing switch from bed” game. The pattern of play just fits spending a few minutes before falling asleep. I am not terribly good at it but I enjoy it mechanically and thematically. This is the only game I have played where I enjoy losing, because it means I am going to get some more story beats.

New World – PC

I am leaving this on the list for reasons of which I am contractually not at liberty to talk about. It comes out in August officially and I am looking forward to that release. I’ve never seen a game that has gone through quite so many changes during its late development cycle as this one. It is going to be interesting to see the state of this game at launch. I have quite a bit of faith in it.

Retro Games – Retro Freak Console, RG350, Retroid, Raspberry Pi 4

Still very much spending a chunk of my time playing games that I grew up with… that are now referred to as Retro games. Still feels really weird to be calling them Retro to be honest. Actually yesterday I literally just got an 8 gb Raspberry Pi 4 model in that I am going to be playing with. That is probably going to become my main emulation device for the short term for anything other than higher end stuff like Cemu that absolutely requires the power of my gaming PC.

To The New and Returning

Destiny 2 – PC

Putting this one back on the list because I am technically playing it again. I am nowhere near as engaged with it as I would like to be and I am not exactly certain why that is the case. From all accounts this is a really good season but I find myself just unable to get stuck into it very deeply. Since we are trueing things up it is in somewhat regular rotation so it is going to get a spot on the list.

The Elder Scrolls Online – PC

I am experiencing a massive renaissance of Elder Scrolls Online and it has rapidly become my primary game over the past month. While I am mostly leveling alts right now, I am going to return to the normal course of trying to quest my way through all of the content in the game and maybe just maybe be ready for the launch of the next expansion in June. I somehow doubt that is going to be a thing because I have to make it through large blocks of content and I know I will become distracted by other games that spring up along the way.

Minecraft – PC Java Client

Another thing that happened since my previous update is that I have returned to Minecraft in a huge way. I spent a lot of time playing solo and even recorded a semi-daily YouTube series on my adventures. Now however I spend my time either popping between my own private Realms world or a closed server run by my friend Zeli. Not playing near as much as I was but I am still popping in and wandering around. There is a stronghold in the nether that I am clearing and trying to set up a dual blaze farm right now so I still have projects that I am plugging away at. Right now I am likely going to wait to re-engage heavily until the new caves update comes out and create a brand new world.

Outriders – PC

Outriders is the new looter shooter hotness that is shipping tomorrow officially. I played the hell out of the demo and now am looking forward to consuming this game peacefully. I am not really planning on playing it as my primary game because I am super engaged with Elder Scrolls right now, but I am absolutely going to slow grind it. The launch time is just really bad because it overlaps with a bunch of other things going on like the launch of a new Diablo 3 season.

Valheim – PC

Valheim is freaking great. If you do not already own this game you should pick it up because it is dirt cheap and one hell of a lot of fun. I’ve reached a point of equilibrium with this game at least until new content ships. I had been playing regularly on a server but I have mostly been playing lately on my solo world. When the hearth and home update ships, I might start a new world depending on how deep the changes go. I will likely always keep Beltopia around given that it is set up nicely for crafting and such.

To Those Departing

Genshin Impact – Android/PC

I have no real idea why I bounced the way that I have from this game. I think partially it might just be that I don’t love “maintenance gaming” where all I am really doing is dailies. However in this game that isn’t even true because they have released a ton of story content since I last played and I never can quite bring myself to come back and play it. There are a lot of things about this game that work so well and then a lot of things that just frustrate me. For example the fact that I feel like I don’t have a reasonable manner in which to level new characters and catch them up to my core party… means that I largely feel like I am stuck always using my core party. Maybe at some point I will return when it ships on the Switch but for now it is a distant memory.

World of Warcraft – PC

Shadowlands is a bad expansion filled with systems that I am not interested in engaging with. In fact I would probably say that Shadowlands is going to be up there with the worst expansions of all time. I talked about how frustrated I was with Battle for Azeroth, but at least that is an expansion that I actively enjoyed the leveling process. Shadowlands I barely made it to the level cap with one of my characters and couldn’t even manage to stomach a single zone on my alts. I am not exactly sure how things went off the rails in the manner that they did but for now at least I am done with the game. Like I have not talked about it a lot because in truth I am not even sure it is worth talking about it. I miss hanging out with my friends who play the game but I miss nothing about Shadowlands.

Ships Passing in the Night

Cyberpunk 2077 – PC

Unlike most of the internet I have nothing but love for this game. I apparently had a sufficient system to play it and lucked out on not encountering many bugs during my play through. As such I am actively craving more content for it, but throwing it on the “ships” list because I have more or less put the game aside for the moment. When DLC releases I will either play through the DLC on my current play through or start a brand new campaign. I hope the issues surrounding this game do not kill this franchise because I loved it deeply on so many different levels.

Dragon Age Inquisition – PC

Dragon Age Inquisition was one of those games that I had bounced off of so many times in the past and then suddenly was able to play happily. I have found with the hustle and bustle of the end of the year… I crave deep single player experiences. This is one of those games that I played during that period and had a blast. Looking forward to this story continuing.

Jedi Fallen Order – PC

When this game first released I tried playing it with a controller because it seemed like that was the proper way to play it. I bounced because the game is not terribly good at explaining when you should leave a planet. However over the holiday break I returned to the game and had a blast, this time playing with my more native control scheme of keyboard and mouse. Truly great game and great experience. If you have not played this game you really owe it to yourself to do so, especially if you like Star Wars even in the least bit.

Knights of the Old Republic 2 – PC

Another game that I have bounced off numerous times is Knights of the Old Republic 2 and for some reason over this break I managed to make my way through it. Like the game is a mess… there is no getting around that but it is a mess that I am happy to have experienced. There is a lot of interesting things going on in this game and knowing now that this released before Fallout New Vegas I can see some of the things that they expanded upon later and made work better in that game. Would I recommend it to someone else? Probably not, but I am still very happy to have experienced it myself.

Summary

The funny thing about this is that I just realized upon writing out this post… that my sidebar was never actually updated from the October edition meaning it was even more out of date than I realized. Now I will hopefully remember to do the thing and actually make the updates once I finish with this post. Here is to also maybe doing this at least once a quarter going forward… if not monthly.
