Biggest Blaugust Ever

Good Morning Folks. I want to start out this week’s posts by giving a rousing round of applause for the Blaugustans who just finished participating in Blaugust 2025. This event would not have existed were it not for the wonderful community of mentors that have volunteered for that role over the last decade. Specifically I want to recognize Krikket who was the first to take up the mantle and acted as defacto leader of this event. Yesterday she made the summary post talking about the participants and handing out of awards and I highly suggest you stop reading this and go check that post out. This is a year that I could not have handled the rigors of running this event, and while I will be happy to take up that mantle again in the future… the success of this event goes out to the crew that helped make it happen while I could not. This is legitimately the largest event that has ever been run, and I was shocked to see the final tally of almost 170 participants. 2024 was previously the largest year with 116, and this 2025 represents roughly 30% growth rate between the two most recent years.

The wildest thing about this event is that we had people participating that did not know until the very end what the event even really was. They just viewed it as a hashtag that got popular on the fediverse and tagged along. In many ways the event has long since outgrown me and my meddling and just become this fixture of our small corner of the internet. I will always think of it as this small game blog thing… but that stopped being true many years ago. The Blaugust discord is super active all year round, but is especially so during the event. The Welcome channel is full of people signing up for the very first time and it has been cool to watch. Watch from the corner of course because everything about the activity levels of the discord now triggers the fuck out of my introvert tendencies… so you only really see me speaking when spoken to directly or talking to something in the super secret mentor channel. This is sort of the way of things that I start… they get bigger than my anxiety can reasonably handle and I get quiet. Folks either tend to view me as aloof or stoic… but in reality I just can’t handle that many people at once.

In other news I have been playing quite a lot of Destiny Rising and am shocked at just how good this game is. That said it has made me contemplate clearing up some disk space to reinstall Destiny 2 so I can have a more direct comparison, since it has been ages since I last played it. The story has been great in Rising, but I am not the biggest fan of the way in which it is doled slowly. You have to do a bunch of different activities to unlock the next bit of story, and my preference tends to be to mainline the story so that I can spend more time enjoying the endgame activities. I know this method is an attempt to keep people engaged longer, but it goes against my natural instincts for this sort of experience.

One of the things that has been really impressive is the breadth of activities and how different they feel. You still only really get a limited amount of activity currency each day in the games pseudo-stamina system, but in truth I am not mainlining the game so it has been more than enough to do anything I might want to do in a single day. If you are playing this game you should absolutely friend me and my code is 20953603268. I attempted to create a version of Greysky Armada but it ultimately timed out. You have 24 hours to get 6 people signed up into the guild (Wolf Pack) in order to create it, and I could not hit that number. If we manage to get enough people playing I will make another attempt at it, because there are a lot of cool things to do in a pack. I joined one of the temporary ones and have been enjoying the weird little missions that open up as a result.

Over in Path of Exile II, I have made it up to level 87 and am capable of pretty comfortably running t15 maps. With that I have unlocked all of the +5 atlas point nodes through cleansing corrupted nexii. Now I am mostly hunting out various unique maps which themselves reward 2 additional points for completing them. I am not sure if there is a place where I can see a total tally of the number of unique maps that I have run, but I think I have done four of them so far. The Lake of Kalandra one is my favorite, but mostly because I love the look of that area. I thought it was cool during the Kalandra league and I still think the effect is extremely slick.

The only problem that I am having right now is that after beating the campaign, and unlocking most of my atlas points… I sort of feel like I don’t have much of a reason to keep playing. I could always keep improving the gear on my character, but it works well enough to do the hardest mapping content, and since I never really care much bout bossing… I sort of feel like I have beaten this league. That is the same problem that I had with Last Epoch, is that after I unlocked all of the Harbingers and took down basic Aberroth I felt like I had accomplished everything that I wanted to accomplish. What makes this game more challenging though is that I keep struggling with technical difficulties. Firstly I cannot watch youtube on my second monitor while playing this game because while the audio keeps playing… the video playback always freezes. Secondly the game crashes constantly, and while I can log right back in where I left off… this eventually grates on you after awhile given that I can only finish one or two maps before the client dies on me. Lastly Path of Exile II as a whole is just not as performant as Path of Exile 1, and even when it is not crashing… there are weird hitches and stutters happening all the time. Supposedly most of this is because I have an intel processor… but still it makes the entire thing eventually not worth fighting with.

In another completely different news… on a whim yesterday afternoon I decided to record myself telling the tale of when I saw a Bigfoot in 1986 and 1995 and then turn this into a video. I’ve written about it here before on the blog, but it always feels like the written versions never really do it justice, because I feel like I am having to go into way too much background information. I did not script this take and as a result it is about 25 minutes of me talking through the story and how it relates to some other sightings in my neck of the woods. I also attempting to illustrate the tale a bit with some google maps shots and various other related images. This will not be everyone’s thing, and it does not fit the rest of my YouTube channel but for some reason I felt like I needed to say it all.

First of Blaugust 2025

The Blaugust Logo that I did not create for once!

Good Morning Folks! Today is the beginning of August and as such also the official beginning of Blaugust. It is weird to see this event happening and me not really having much to do with it after over a decade of scurrying around to get things up and running. Please note… this is a good kind of weird because it is a miracle that my community is running it for me, since I could not deal with it myself this year. Krikket’s blog has been the place were a lot of details are launching and if you are curious about the event you can check out the intro post and the calendar of events and prompts post to get more details. I am still not entirely certain how much I am going to actively participate in the event, but I am at the very least following the tradition and making a proper First of Blaugust post. Yesterday I posted about the other significance of today’s date so I am not really going to go into that.

Old Man Bel with a Knock-Off Gengar Beanie

Often times we do a bit of an introduction in these here first posts, so I figure I will follow that pattern as well. Hi I am Belghast or Bel as most people who have been around this community tend to call me. I was born near the Gen X/Millennial divide and have some traits of both factions. I started this blog in 2009 during the height of World of Warcraft and it evolved over the years through various games and eventually just became my online public info dump page. Often times my posts are me working through my feelings regarding some subject, and lately with the death of my wife they can be a bit raw at times. In 2013 I challenged myself to blog every single day, and managed this for about three and a half years before relaxing the rigor and just blogging when I am feeling like it… which is still most weekdays. In 2014 this turned into the Blaugust challenge and there has been only one year where I did not run the event prior to this current year where my gracious community is running it in my absence. Over the years it became less about the challenge of blogging every day, and more about giving the blogging community a booster shot to keep folks active the rest of the year.

Double Divine Drop in Path of Exile

Lately you will find me mostly writing about my adventures in various ARPGs like Path of Exile, Last Epoch, and Diablo games. I tend to get fairly deep into the weeks and write posts that will largely be incomprehensible to anyone who is not already bought into the nonsense. However on occasion I do write targeted posts designed at trying to onboard friends into the madness of whatever I am playing. I do my best to be fairly approachable and am willing to share whatever knowledge I happen to have about whatever games I am playing. No question is too silly, especially in a game like Path of Exile that requires serious commitment to actually push through the early hours and succeed. I’ve probably played well over three thousand hours at this point and still consider myself somewhat of a newbie.

Weekly Fractal Nonsense in Guild Wars 2

Over the course of this blog’s life I have devoted a lot of time and effort to various MMORPGs. Most recently that has been Guild Wars 2 because its a-la-carte nature fits my gameplay and mental state most clearly. Similarly I have also created getting started content for that game and many others, but a lot of my posts are recounting whatever stuff I have been getting up to either solo or with my friends. For example on Thursday nights I have been getting together with some of my friends and running Fractals or whatever happens to fit the menu for that night. In theory at some point if we ever gather enough people to do it, we might change these into Strikes which require 10 players instead of 5 players. Occasionally I will flip the script and go hardcore into another MMORPG for awhile, like Final Fantasy XIV or World of Warcraft… but that has happened considerably less frequently lately than it previously did. The forced grouping nature of a lot of those games are a real turnoff when I am deep in turtle mode and staying away from other human beings.

Weekly AggroChat Podcast Episode

In addition to the semi-daily blog, I also record a semi-weekly podcast with a bunch of friends on Saturday nights, and publish the episodes on Sunday. The crew assembled are all folks that I met through gaming including a bunch of people that I used to raid with back in the early days of World of Warcraft (Tam, Thalen, Kodra), and then some friends that I picked up along the way back when twitter was actually good… and not an awful mess. Ammo for example does all of the artwork on this blog and the masthead represents something like a dozen different individual commissions that I have composited together over the years. Grace is someone that I met through Twitter initially but over the last decade we have become close enough that we literally consider each other siblings. Ash is someone that I initially met through Tam but sort of fell in love with them and they are genuinely one of the best people that I know on the planet. Just like with the blog we do absolutely nothing to really promote or monetize anything, because quite frankly it is just a time each week when we set aside to hang out with each other… and a show occasionally happens.

My Delightful Mess of Children

I have three cats with wildly different personalities. Mollie is now our eldest and she has some problems… namely she doesn’t fully understand how cats should cat and is scared of everything. Though at some point over the last year she decided she now lives on the bed… and gripes at me until I make it every morning and put her self warming pad in exactly the right position. Josie is my sweet baby… that has no coordination and can’t quite figure out how to retract her claws at the appropriate time. She has gotten more leery of the world as she has aged, but is still an amazing snuggler when correctly motivated. Gracie is the baby in every sense of that word, and cannot fathom that anyone exists on the planet that does not love her with all of their heart. Especially with the death of my wife, she is pretty much glued to my side 24/7 and goes where I go. Mollie snuggles with me when I first get to bed each night, but runs like hell when Gracie shows up and claims daddy. Josie sadly has not slept on the bed in awhile, but will occasionally jump on my side for some serious head-scratches before wandering off wherever she has decided to go that evening. Josie especially loves windows and sleeps during the day in these upstairs bathroom windows that were about half the size they should be for a cat of her girth.

That’s it folks. That is what you are in for with this blog. I do dumb things and then write about them, and occasionally post cute cat photos. Fair warning there have been a lot of “Sad Bel Times” posts lately as I deal with the ramifications of my wife’s passing. Stay awhile and listen… or don’t… its your call.

Reject Content Mills

Good Morning Folks. Yesterday the news broke that Polygon, a gaming website that I actually really enjoyed was sold to Valnet. This is a company largely known for being a content mill, with pretty awful working conditions, and also know for being exceptionally litigious. This is not necessarily a new thing and part of the larger general trend of the “enshitification” of games media. Similarly yesterday it was announced that Jeff Grubb left Giant Bomb which comes on the back of multiple rounds of layoffs in 2023 and 2024… and will likely signal the official end of that site. This comes after being acquired by Fandom, aka the folks behind some of the absolute worst gaming wikis you have ever had the displeasure of reading. This is a tale that has been told so many times in the past from the gutting of Vice Media to the explosion of Joystiq and all of its subsequent brands… to the gobbling up of so many sites you cared about by Ziff Davis. Though honestly… those under the thumb of ZD seem to be faring better than others at least thusfar.

Why is this happening? Because someone out there thinks they can turn a buck from “enthusiast industries”, so that they can convert your love of something… into questionable advertising dollars. The thing is… the shedding of writers generally comes first as part of the “restructuring” plans. Generally speaking we flock to specific sites because they develop a voice, a voice that we feel represents our certain perspective on the world. We develop a relationship with these sites, because we begin to feel like we can trust their opinions. The thing is… “voice” is not what a large media conglomerate wants. They want slick advertiser friendly prose devoid of emotion or opinion, that effectively amounts to a regurgitation of whatever was said in the press release. I know this because I am on the same mailing lists as all of these folks and see the press releases a few days ahead of the articles coming out.

I am small and unimportant, and hopefully so much so that no one cares enough to notice me writing about this topic. The thing is… I am also someone who paid attention to those bylines and noticed who’s voice I was caring about. One of the brilliant things that has been happening almost as a counter movement to the corporatization of games media… is that the authors have been spinning off and creating their own things. What I suggest to you as my reader, is to stop going to these sites that have become devoid of spirit… and instead make a conscious effort to go to more independent voices. That is not to say that these sites do not have their own conflicts of interest as they attempt to fund the ventures through a combination of patreon and ad revenue… but they are better than the alternative.

Massively OP

When Joystiq largely blew up in 2015, it caused several of the sites that I cared about the most to effectively die. One of these sites was Massively, because at that point I had transitioned from only caring about World of Warcraft, to caring about MMORPGs in general. Thing is over the years of being on gaming Twitter I had become friends with a good number of the writers there, so when they decided to spin off and make their own thing happen, I was one of the original backers of the kickstarter. Even today I chip in a meager $5 per month and have done so since the patreon went live. I don’t actually READ any of the news through Patreon because quite honestly I cannot be bothered, especially when I have it delivered to my Mastodon feed their their aggregator account there. However I suggest you get in the habit of reading the about page for the sites you are consuming, so you can understand a bit better about how they are organized.

Blizzard Watch

Another Site that spun up as Joystiq was dying, was Blizzard Watch. This site was crafted out of the flames of WoW Insider, which is responsible for my very first viral moment on this blog. This is another site created by a dedicated batch of writers who care deeply about Blizzard games, and kept writing about them. This is another patreon that I backed for quite awhile, and they even have set up residence on our very own Gamepad for their Mastodon account. While my own interest in Blizzard games has waned over the years, the site has continued to be an excellent source of news. Once again check out their About page to understand who is making the site what it is.

Aftermath

Remember the bit where I said follow the writers behind these sites? Well for years I have followed Gita Jackson, first on Twitter and then later on Bluesky. During one of the dust ups at Kotaku, they spun off into Vice Media’s Waypoint. Then with Vice Media blew up and killed Waypoint and a few other sub-brands, I followed them as they branched out to do their own thing with a bunch of other folks from Waypoint, called Aftermath. Like I have said numerous times, you can learn a lot about a site by reading the About link. I follow the site’s BlueSky account and they tend to cover anything major going on in the gaming industry. If you’ve never read the site, I highly suggest you check it out.

404 Media

Similarly when Vice Media exploded, it also took out Motherboard, which was a more generalist technology issues site. I followed the team over to 404 Media when they launched it in in 2023. Lately they have been chasing the Signal messages thread in United States political discourse, but they have also devoted a lot of page time to investigating various purveyors of AI slop. As far as authors go I specifically really enjoy the writing of Jason Koebler. Mostly I am throwing this out there to show that there are independent sites that have spun off for almost every subject you can think of, because the general abuse of writers has been wide spread enough to general an entire industry of folks who have had enough of this bullshit.

Loading Ready Run

I cannot talk about independent games journalism and entertainment however without also mentioning what I consider to be the gold standard. I have loved Loading Ready Run for so many years, and remember back when they were tied to the Escapist. Originally known for skit comedy, the have become this entire cottage empire making content about the things they care about. Qwerpline is one of my favorite things to exist on this planet, or whatever planet Nsberg is located on. Checkpoint embedded above is effectively required viewing every single week, and it is pretty common that we end up talking about some topic first introduced there on our own podcast. Over the years they have segmented their YouTube channel a bit into one devoted to Video Games, Tabletop Games, Magic the Gathering, Comedy, and then one that is mostly their live productions. Better than all of this is the fact that many of the folks are actually active on Mastodon, my social network of choice. At this point I assume you know about LRR but just in case… my god you have been missing a lot.

Independent Bloggers

Whether or not I necessarily intended to… through the poorly thought out creation of Blaugust in 2013… I have become a bit of a nexus at least in the games blogging community. Each year I update my blogroll on the side of this blog with the current list of participants, and among that are a number of really great voices that are out there saying the things they think about games on a regular basis. While some folks view Blaugust as a race to be run, and stop being quite so active after August has passed. There are folks like Wilhelm with The Ancient Gaming Noob that you can almost set your watch by with just how frequently he posts. Similarly Roger is constantly spinning up discussions about how he feels regarding games and media on Contains Moderate Peril. Legitimately just go down the list from Scopique, to Tipa, to Nimgimli, and countless more you have a constant flow of posts coming from independent voices. All of which are more thought provoking than anything you would read on an industrial slop site.

Basically I am just trying to show you that there are options out there rather than supporting these sites that have proven year after year not to support their writers. The answer to “fixing the internet” is to take back some control, and that means adding a bit more intentionality into your media consumption. The content mills need our eyeballs to succeed, and ultimately it is our responsibility to take them away. Do I think this will change anything? Hell no… I am not that deluded. However I did feel like I had to say something.

Blaugust 2024 In Review

Good Morning Folks! Because of the quirks of the calendar, the day that was normally “Tabulation Day” aka September 1st took place on a Sunday. It just so happened that I was rather sick yesterday, and today is a Holiday here in the United States. As a result of both of these things, I pushed my tabulation activities to this morning where I have spent it counting posts on blogs. Huge thanks to everyone who used the self-reporting form, as it was a great boon to speeding this up. Last year was a big year, and I honestly did not expect this year to grow even beyond that… but shockingly we did. Huge thanks to everyone who helped to get the word out, and it still shocks me how well this event works without the existence of Twitter. For years this was largely something that spawned from Twitter for folks who were actively on Twitter, and the last two years have proven to me that it really had nothing to do with that social community and more to do with the spirit of the bloggers who were participating.

Here are some of the Statistics for this year:

  • 116 Blogs Signed Up for Blaugust.
    • Of Those Blogs 113 Made at least one blog post during the month of August.
  • We had 67 blogs sign up that had never participated before in a Blaugust Event.
  • During the past month, Blaugust Participants created 1978 Content Posts.

What has shocked me is that I honestly believed we would have a big drop-off from last year. There were a lot of things at play, it was the 10th year running the event, and Mastodon was booming due to the relative implosion Twitter was experiencing, which then led to a huge surge in DIY tech as folks felt the need to stake their digital claim to some real estate that they controlled out on the internet. This year we’ve continued to see a bit of a broadening of the event as it found its way to new writers. This has led to a few growing pains, because quite honestly… nothing about the way I had been running events really works at this scale. So going forward we are going to need to make some tweaks to the formula to make it a little easier for folks to participate and consume the output. It was an event very light on any sort of scaffolding in large part because many of us have known each other for well over a decade. I still find it wild that any of you are willing to follow me for this nonsense on a yearly basis.

Blauginner Class of 2024

One of the changes that we made mid-flight this year was changing from the terminology of “newbie” to something unique to us… The Blauginner. Newbie has always had a bit of a weird negative connotation and I thought it was time for us to move away from that. Blauginner is something that a friend of mine threw out there when I was shopping for ideas, and it was so silly that I knew we had to roll with it. Each year we lose blogging voices from the community, either because life went in another direction or just plain burnout. One of the core goals of Blaugust, especially after the loss of the Newbie Blogger Initiative has been to stoke new blogging voices and cultivate a renewable resource. As such I think it is extremely important to take time each year to acknowledge the folks who set forth on this journey for the first time regardless if they managed to make any of the other awards.

The Awards and Methodology

Now we reach the moment where I talk about the various Awards associated with Blaugust. I tried to carry forward the general styling elements that I ran with during this event when I created the badges. These will all be available on the Blaugust Media Kit in the full-resolution version if you want to snag them for your blog’s sidebar. For anyone who needs a bit of a refresher on our rules, here are the guidelines that the awards are assigned based upon.

  • Bronze Award – You made at least 5 Posts during the month of August 2024.
  • Silver Award – You made at least 15 Posts during the month of August 2024.
  • Gold Award – You made at least 25 posts during the month of August 2024.
  • Rainbow Diamond Award – You beat the challenge and posted 31 times or more during the month of August 2024.

Before we get to the lists however it is time for my yearly disclaimer. I am a human being and as a result highly fallible. This year’s tabulation was quite daunting given the large number and not reaching out for additional help. If you feel that I made a mistake please feel free to reach out and let me know. Some blog layouts are much harder to tabulate than others… and I do my best to count them all. I am extremely thankful each year for the folks with much more standard layouts, those with self-tabulating calendar widgets, and at a minimum those who use hard date stamps rather than relative ones.

One final note. Authors that have multiple blogs in the competition are tabulated individually for each blog but the award assigned is for the total contribution of the Author.

The Bronze Club 2024

This year we had Thirty-Five folks who managed the feat of posting at least five times during the month of August 2024. Since a lot of this event is about posting more often and finding your own schedule to follow. Five times during the Month of August would be around one post a week… which seems like a completely reasonable schedule.

The Silver Club 2024

Traditionally we have this pattern emerge where folks generally either get Bronze or Rainbow, without a lot of folks in between the two extremes. This year given the larger sample size, we had more folks get Silver and Gold but it still more or less fits the same larger pattern. This year we had Eleven blogs that managed the feat of posting at least fifteen times during the month of August 2024. To continue the theme of choosing a schedule, this would equate to posting at least three times per week. Especially if you landed on something along the lines of a Monday, Wednesday, and Friday schedule… this also seems completely manageable.

The Gold Club 2024

Now we get to the folks who usually have a pattern already and are sticking with it… aka the Gold Club. This has been the territory where I have lived for years in this competition because I largely post weekdays only. This year was particularly fraught for me, and as a result, I barely squeezed by with the minimum number of posts to count as Gold. This year we had Seven blogs that posted at least twenty-five times during the month of August 2024. Keeping the schedule thread rolling forward, this would be around five times per week.

The Rainbow Diamond Club

Let’s be honest… the whole Rainbow Diamond thing is a bit nonsensical. Years ago when I decided that maybe posting Thirty-One posts during a single month was a bit harmful and burn-out inducing… I watered down what was the previous highest rank to 25 posts, and then created this “S-Tier” as a way of acknowledging folks who went above and beyond in the event. All of that said I continue to be impressed by the number of folks who end up going for the highest possible award in the event and this year we had Thirty-Four folks who posted at least thirty-one times during the month of August 2024. I am still not entirely certain this is a healthy pace, but it is impressive to see regardless.

The AI Diamonds

Now friends… we get into a bit of controversy. We had two Blaugustans who leaned on large language models heavily for the generation of their content. In coming years we will likely have some sort of an “AI Rider” that describes what is and is not allowed for the event. I mentioned growing pains… and this is one of them. This is an event designed to push folks to create content and at the core of this… is human creativity. As such I just cannot bring myself to list these two contenders on the same list of the others who gained the Rainbow Diamond award, and as such they are getting theirs but with a bit of an asterisk. Technically there was nothing in the rules to stop folks from having a large language model pump out an entry into the event, so technically they accomplished the highest awards… but it does not mean that I have to enjoy the fact. This is probably petty of me, but unfortunately, this is the event that I have kept going, and as I have been reminded many times… it is my call.

Honorable Mentions

To back away from that awkward situation, it is time to actually talk about something good. I think it was two years ago when I first decided to create an honorable mention badge for folks because really I think it should be acknowledged. Signing up for this event, putting yourself out there, and deciding that you are going to try something new really is a lot. Sometimes there are folks who have technical difficulties along the way, or life has other plans, but I still feel like it is important the cherish the willingness to participate. Maybe some of them will return next year, have a better start and even get all the way to the end with a shiny new award to show for it. This year we had Twenty-Six folks who made that very first step.

Final Thoughts

Every year it seems like I learn some lessons from running this event. I am always exceptionally thankful for all of the help that I get from the mentors. They often act as a sounding board for a number of my ideas. As such there are likely going to be some changes coming in the months between now and the next Blaugust. Not that we have had to deal with much yet, but it is finally time that we create codes of conduct for the event and wrap one of those nifty bots around the discord sign-up process. We did have to deal with some “selling to the community” weirdness this time around, which I was not expecting but should likely receive some clear differentiation between what is promoting your content, and what is promoting your business.

As I said above we will also be tackling the concept of large language models and this competition because I feel like it is important to lay out a framework for what is and is not allowed. None of this is terribly fun, but I guess this is to be expected when we have grown so massively over the last few years. I guess it is time to start treating this event as a proper project and not just something that I do once a year and for some reason other people follow along with. It was a bad year for me across the board, and I did not spend nearly as much time as I had previously engaged with the community. It is a bit of a bummer because it seems like that is really the magic bit of this formula. On the self-tabulation form, almost everyone across the board commented about how much they enjoyed the community. The cool thing is that thanks to the discord… that doesn’t have to stop when September begins.

As I am every year, I am deeply proud of everyone who participated this year. I apologize for being a bit of an absentee leader, but am booned by how well things continue to run in my absence. Again I remind you that I am a deeply flawed and fallible person, and if you find an issue with any of my calculations please reach out and let me know. I did my best to tabulate the posts, but when it relied upon me counting breaks between posts… around twenty-five my eyes occasionally began to fuzz out so my counts might be slightly off in a few places. By the time of posting this, I should have updated the Blaugust Media Kit page with all of the awards, so feel free to snag them and do whatever you want with them. I encourage you to keep blogging and stay active in the community during the coming year. I appreciate you all greatly.
