Atlas Invasion is Wild

Hey Folks! I am back on my Path of Exile bullshit. It always feels good to go home, and there will always be something about Path of Exile that feels special to me. How I got here however is its own story. Since it has been 10 going on 11 months since the last Path of Exile league… Grinding Gear Games keeps running events in order to briefly placate the very angry and dejected player base. The Phrecia league event was extremely fun, and one of the best times I have had playing Path of Exile in recent memory. Currently we are going through a phase where they have unlocked and made private leagues free for all players to create… something that normally has a relatively hefty cost to it. I think we paid around $60 for the league that we ran, because we extended the time a bit and it would have been more had we needed to scale up the number of participants in any meaningful way.

Currently anyone can create a private league for free during this event, and there are a number of different templates. SirGog for example is running a league with the Phrecia alternate classes but with the extremely difficult Gauntlet rule set created specifically for Zizaran’s reoccurring Gauntlet event. Pohx on the other hand is running a more casual friendly outing with the inclusion of the Shifting Stones and Atlas Invasion rulesets. Essentially Shifting Stones makes it so every map has either Tower Damage Blight, Endless Delirium, Endless Legion, or Player Haunting Tormented Spirits mapped to the specific Atlas Keystones that grant those things, and what a zone has changes every 15 minutes. Atlas Invasion on the other hand makes it so that once you leave the beach, every single map has two bosses that have “invaded” the map and the pool of what it can draw from is wild.

Most of the time you are going to get one of the generic rebrands of campaign bosses, but every so often you get a pinnacle boss spawning in your map. These are scaled down in difficulty for the area of the map, but still do all of the same attacks. For example while I was fighting the Dweller in Act 1… I heard the “DIE!!!!” voice line and then frantically tried to dodge a giant shaper beam that came through the wall. Before finishing Act 1 I had fought Shaper, Elder, a few Guardian encounters, and Ulhtred the pinnacle boss attacked to Expedition. The ones that I found roughest weirdly enough were the ones associated with Breach… because Tul for whatever reason will oneshot me every time I see him when I may not be prepared to dodge his frontal cone attack.

You may be thinking to yourself… This sounds awful! You would be wrong. As penance for making you fight a bunch of Atlas bosses they each drop somewhere between one to four unique items. Before I exited Act 2 I had already seen a Cloak of Flames, pretty much setting me up for success the entire run as Righteous Fire Chieftain. Most of the uniques are the low tier ones that you will leave rotting on the ground, but every so often something really special drops. Essentially it feels like mapping with a juice Rogue Exiles atlas strategy… but begins the moment you exit LionEye’s Watch. What is really cool is how you realize that there are a lot of uniques that are exceptionally powerful at low levels. I’ve picked up a couple of Cloak of Flames, Immortal Flesh, Berek’s Respite, and once I get a second Rise of the Phoenix I will probably start corrupting them trying for some interesting results.

One of the interesting things about a limited trade environment, is that because I know I will never find a perfect item… I tend to be willing to craft more gear for myself. Granted the boots in the above screenshot dropped almost perfect already from Betrayal, and all I had to do was slap fire resistance on them. Coming back to Path of Exile, it really feels like they could do with bumping down Exalted Orbs in loot tier so that they drop more often. I’ve yet to see one and had to buy one from the currency exchange to do a craft that required one. I’ve been focused on mostly running Betrayal to get my enchants and Harvest because it is by far the most accessible crafting method for getting decent gear, specifically resist rings, amulets, and cluster jewels.

However I am having to re-learn a lesson that I have learned many times in the past… by not going into Delve early I have missed out on a bunch of currency and maps. Delve is so damned good at producing large amounts of basic crafting currency. I have been strapped for pretty much everything from alts to alchs and it sucks. More than that Delve Cities seem to produce a bunch of random maps independent of what tier your current progression is at. So instead I am relying entirely on the few horizon orbs I get, vendor recipe, and map drop luck to make my way through the atlas progression. I did not really start making progress until yesterday because I did not hit maps until Saturday night. The juicy nature of the Atlas bosses has meant that during the campaign I was seeking out every optional boss… and doing every Vaal side area because they would guarantee two extra bosses as well.

The only negative of the event is that something appears to be jacked up with Kingsmarch. Essentially more than half of the times I tried to travel there I would get “Failed to join any instances”. There are threads about this error where folks have claimed that logging out and back in fixed it for them. This has not been the case for me. I can bounce in and out of the game effectively forever and it does not fix it when it is occurring. Then randomly other times it will just work fine and allow me to pop into the zone and do my business. This has sucked quite a bit because shipments are a pretty good source of early gear and currency, and I have effectively been locked out of them. This also means that my progression in Kingsmarch is a bit behind where it should be. Hopefully now that we are past the weekend someone at GGG will sort this out.

All in all though this has been a really fun event. Really if you are trying to do a group found/semi-SSF event this is the perfect ruleset. You end up generating a ton of uniques and for example I noticed every time a Dreadarc dropped which is something Kodra would have needed for Hexblast. Before I left act one I probably saw a dozen of them, which was wild. So essentially if we were ever going to do another AggroChat league I would want to run this ruleset and then have folks basically post a shopping list of what uniques are useful to them, so we could fill up the guild bank. Another thing that I found great while leveling was the Araku Tiki amulet which provides up to 50 life and 50 Fire Resistance… perfect for a budding Righteous Fire character. I ended up wearing one of these until maps because I just could not find a good enough neck to give up that much life and resistance on a single item.

I’ve had a lot of fun so far, but not sure how much I am really going to push it. Some leagues ago I joined SirGog’s chat channel during the scour league which made it so everything dropped as bases and you had to craft your own gear. After that… I just never reset my global back to another channel. I’ve come to really like the chill but focused vibe that the channel tends to attract, and did not know that chat channels apparently spanned across multiple leagues. As a result I have been listening to folks who are participating in his “Softcore Gauntlet” ruleset event and while I normally do not go for “challenge for challenge’s sake” type events, it sounds equally hilarious. So at some point I am going to roll a character in that event when I figure out what I can plan that will be exceptionally tanky using the Phrecia classes.

Last Epoch Season 2 Delayed

Good Morning Folks. Yesterday we got a bit of news from Eleventh Hour Games that they would be delaying the launch of Last Epoch Season 2 from April 2nd to April 17th. This is to create some distance between their launch date and that of Path of Exile 2 and its first league on the 4th. This whole situation is frustrating because multiple sources have stated that Eleventh Hour Games was in communication with Grinding Gear Games regarding their choice of April 2nd making it an extreme dick move to schedule their own start two days later. I entirely feel like GGG is in the wrong here… but there also may be some external forces at work that we do not know about.

Whatever the case this is probably the right decision for Eleventh Hour Games. As stated in a Zizaran video talking about this situation, it is rare that people go back to a game after the launch… so that would likely mean folks would play Last Epoch for a day or two… if they even gave it a shot at all, and then would flip to Path of Exile II and never look back. I am disappointed mostly because right now I care far more about Last Epoch than I do Path of Exile II. I do not think that there is going to be enough in the upcoming patch to really shift the trajectory of POE2 enough for me to truly enjoy it more than the first game. I might be shocked on the 27th when they announce all of the content, but in truth I mostly just want to get my hands on the redesigned endgame for Last Epoch.

In the meantime I am still playing quite a bit of the Legacy of Phrecia event. In theory I should hit level 99 tonight and I am starting to pick back up and work on some of the challenges that I never completed from Settlers of Kalguur. I’m cycling between Delve and mapping and still only have two of the four voidstones unlocked. I should probably work on that, but I hate the process of grinding for the fragments required to attempt Maven and Uber Elder. The whole bossing system in Path of Exile feels bad to me. I feel like there should be quest support for all four voidstones like there are the first two so that you can knock these out in a relatively straightforward fashion. At some point I should probably try out a T17 again to see if I can complete that, but my build is not exactly great at bossing. Generally speaking I just do not enjoy that side of the game and the whole process of getting access to the fights.

I have burned through a good chunk of my reserves of gold and dust in order to start up a bunch of mappers. One of the league challenges from Settlers that I never knocked out was running 200 t14 or better maps at 100% success rate with mappers, and I figured I might as well start chipping away at that since I am still playing. If I can push to level 100 and complete the rest of those maps that will knock out one more of the challenges and potentially give me a bigger totem pole for my hideout. In truth Path of Exile is just a comfortable activity for me to spend chill evenings listening to an audiobook, and has kind of become my default gaming activity. I hate that among the AggroChat folks, I am the only one who seems to have really reached that point with the game.

I am also still pushing forward with Kaiju: Battlefield Surgeon because I hate having a “did not complete” in my list. I swapped over to the Soundbooth Theater version of the audiobook and it is infinitely better than the one I was listening to earlier. There is a significant difference between being read a book out loud, and having someone act out a book… and at this point I have become spoiled by the later. This is a brutal story… in content… and in just how much graphic detail is put into it. I am not sure I would ever suggest this to someone else, but it has enough of a hook into me that I am going to see it to its conclusion. Effectively this is Hostel style torture porn, and my kink does not run in that direction.

Scuffed Scavenger

Hey Folks! Things are starting to come together. Yesterday I made a number of changes to my build that have incrementally moved me towards the indestructible nonsense that is the pinnacle form of Righteous Fire. The next map that I run I will ding level 92 but this morning I dumped a fresh POB to show the state of things. The biggest change is that I managed to pick up a Shaper shield and after running a bunch of Harvest I managed to craft one with 5% life gain on block, which allowed me to shift to the block version of the build. What confuses me however is I have no clue how Pohx is hitting 75% spell block with his build, so I am going to have to pay considerably closer attention to his POB to understand it.

Right now I have 4687 life, but that will improve as I continue to shift things around in the build and pile on additional levels. I have 83% Fire Resistance and 80% Cold and Lightning which when combined with 75% attack block and 30% spell block feels pretty comfortable. Most of the time I can just stand still in a pack of mobs and my health barely moves. I really need more regeneration at this point because I am not super comfortable with only 1100 ish. I would really prefer to be sitting somewhere around 2000, but had to give up some nodes on the tree as well as the regen % on my helmet. I’m essentially playing a juggling act right now since I am not able to focus ONLY on Fire Resistance since I am not playing a Chieftain.

I made a number of gear swaps. First up I rolled a much better temporary sceptre using alts and then threw some ignite and additional fire damage on it. Sadly I could not craft the big betrayal Fire/Ignite on it, but I have a few more sceptres that I am working on rolling T1 damage over time multi on so I can try and recombinate something with both generic multi and fire multi on it. I picked up a somewhat scuffed Elder helm and got 20 Burning Damage/20 Concentrated Effect on it giving me a psuedo-six-link Fire Trap. I rolled a life recovery shield like I talked about earlier and also improved the Immortal Flesh I was running for a minimum negative resistance while gaining a bit of life and regen over my existing one.

My current Idol set up gives me a bunch of Delirium and I have managed to gather up raw cluster jewels and rolled a new Large cluster with Prismatic Heart, Widespread Destruction, and the throwaway Smoking Remains. I am combining it with one Medium that has Fan the Flames and Flow of Life, and another that has Flow of Life and Smoking Remains. As I find more minimum passive skill medium and large clusters I will probably try and craft slightly better versions of these cluster jewels. Smoking Remains is not exactly a great hit, but I also did not want to spend forever rolling over things and needed something I could use. I bought the cheapest two jewels I could find on the market with max Fire Multi and percentage life on them, but again those could be massively improved over time.

That is honestly the broad theme of this character… everything is more than a little scuffed. I’m trying to learn to give up on perfect items, because quite honestly I am not making enough currency to be able to afford them. Instead I am trying to find or craft items that are good enough for my purposes. I’ve played RF enough to know what I actually need, versus what the perfect textbook example of an item looks like. At this point I should be fine to get all the way through the rest of maps, and considerably deeper into delve. Right now I am sitting at 62 of 115 and have a few more maps that are ready to run. I’ve been holding off on running any Red maps because I know Kirac will almost exclusively start giving me those once I have passed that boundary. I am a weirdo that likes completing each individual tier in order if I can help it. I really need to find more cities down on delve, because they produce random map tiers rather than ones that I would natively have access to.

I’m recycling an image from yesterday of the pops, but really… I think this build is starting to feel stronger than the Chieftain build normally is at this point. The explosions feel like they spread so much further than the Hinekora explosions do. If I can get an Oriath’s End it will feel even better because effectively I will have three sources of explode combined with ignite proliferation… which should basically allow me to just charge through maps. The big goals going forward are to get another Cloak of Flame that is either better rolled than my current one, or has a useful corruption on it… and then figure out how best to six-link it. After that once I get back down into Delve I am going to start banking more 40% Elemental Damage sceptres in an attempt to recombinate a phenomenal one.

It feels like each league I play… I get more comfortable with understanding what I can do with gear and how I can acquire it on my own. If I can get a rudimentary understanding of recombination under my belt, I think it will improve gear acquisition considerably.

Better Early Maps

Good Morning Folks. At this point I am several days into the Legacy of Phrecia event in Path of Exile. I decided to follow the path of Pohx and am playing Righteous Fire on the new Scion Scavenger. This effectively gives me Obliteration pops, Chaos Ignite, and a free Cloak of Flames that can then be stacked with a real cloak of flames to convert 80% of all physical damage taken as fire. Initially… this does not feel nearly as effective at killing as the Chieftain variant I usually play, nor does it feel as tanky yet. However I am still very much wearing scuffed gear. I hit maps half of the way through Saturday and have been juggling between map progression and Delve progression as best I can. I am definitely intrigued enough to want to see this build to its completion. You can see the current state of my build here as I dumped a POB this morning.

What I find most interesting about this event is how mapping feels with the Idol system replacing the Atlas Passive Tree. Essentially the early maps, namely the white and early yellow maps feel like they are way more juicy than they ever would be at this point. However they also feel deeply random, because most of the idols that you end up getting… are not really focused on a single league mechanic. I took the time to screenshot everything that I am currently using and it is a bit of a mess. I’ve specifically targeted at trying to get Niko on my maps so that I can gain Sulphite, but am also not really gaining any of the additional benefits from the passive nodes on the tree.

This is really starting to be felt as by 41 nodes into the Atlas of Worlds, I would start to have a coherent strategy going… that reinforces itself by buffing one specific league mechanic. I would probably have the buffs applied when I collect sulphite nodes, or have them spawn golems which increase my sulphite gain and give me additional density. Instead it is a struggle to get Niko consistently on my maps, and I am gaining almost no other benefits from him being there… and as such I have to run way more maps to fill up on Delve juice before going back down into the mines. Similarly when I get Jun… without the nodes supporting him the Betrayal mobs don’t drop veiled items nearly as often… and as such I am struggling to build out my crafting bench. It feels like running maps that are generically juiced with somewhat random abilities…. but not really being able to focus on anything.

I am not making a ton of currency yet, but have managed to gather enough to get most of the uniques I need for the build. I picked up a Cloak of Flames and five linked it, and hope to maybe pick up a second and begin working on trying to six link that one. I snagged an Immortal Flesh pretty early, but it is not what I would consider a well rolled one. At some point I want to replace it for one with similar life stats on it but the minimum negative elemental resistance. I am running a Rise of the Phoenix shield, but at some point I will drop this to go with a Shaper Shield as I transition into the life gain on block build variant. I just spent most of my available currency on a well rolled pair of Legacy of Fury boots, which help with the clear considerably. Probably the item that I need to upgrade the most is my Sceptre which is a complete trash item that I picked up off the ground and threw a few things on it. My goal once I get deep enough into delve is to start picking up Sceptre bases with the purpose of trying to craft something with the recombinator.

All told though it is quite a bit of fun, and it has been ages since I ran a build that uses Legacy of Fury. I have the blackstar mtx from several leagues ago that makes the pops turn pink, which goes nicely with the purple righteous fire aura mtx that I am running. I’ve crafted a couple of cluster jewels so that I have Fan the Flames giving me elemental proliferation and Flow of Life then the combo of Prismatic Heart/Widespread Destruction on a large cluster. I have another medium cluster that I am working on crafting and my hope is to get another Flow of Life and maybe Burning Bright but I would probably roll with anything halfway decent. At some point I want a +Fire% Light of Meaning and an Unnatural Instinct but that is way beyond my price range. Similarly I would love to add on an Oriath’s End for more pops but I am not sure I will be able to hit that price point. I wish Scavenger was going to Standard so I could attempt to build the penultimate version there at some point.

All told though I am having a heck of a lot of fun. This event is pretty great and honestly… I would not have minded if this were turned into a three month long league. The absence of the Atlas Tree is a bit of a pain, but I would honestly love to see these idols worked into the game in some form in the future. There are some nodes that I really like having… but are just too cumbersome to path over to for various Atlas strategies. I would love to see a much smaller version of the Idol inventory that maybe only lets you slot only a few idols. For example I always run the node that turns every strongbox into a corrupted rare, because I like the way it feels… and if I could simply equip an idol to give every build that… or endless delirium… I probably would.

Anyways. Have you been playing the Legacy of Phrecia event? What are your thoughts so far? Drop me a line below, or of course respond to either Mastodon or Bluesky.
